On January 29, 2024, Eureka Entertainment will release their Blu-ray (Region B) for Kung Fu Cult Master, a 1994 Hong Kong martial arts film directed by Wong Jing (The Saint of Gamblers, Chasing the Dragon) that stars Jet Li (League of Gods, Last Hero in China) and features choreography by Sammo Hung (Knockabout, Project A).

The film also stars Sharla Cheung (Handsome Siblings), Gigi Lai (A Wicked Ghost), Chingmy Yau (Lover of the Last Empress), Sammo Hung (My Flying Wife), Francis Ng (Final Run), Bryan Leung (Master and the Kid), Collin Chou (License to Steal), Richard Ng (Vampire Cleanup Department), Ekin Cheng (Return to a Better Tomorrow) and Lam Ching-ying (The Big Boss).

One of director Wong Jing’s most underappreciated films is this wuxia extravaganza based on Jin Yong’s The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber.

While various martial arts sects fight over a pair of mythical swords that grant great power, Zhang Wuji (Jet Li) goes on a quest to become a great martial artist and end the conflict.

  1. David says:

We already gave the Pandora version region A. Hoping 88 films will do a 2/4k remaster and also includes the additional cuts and alternative scene.

  2. Smotch says:

What alternative scenes? Been forever since I saw this one

  3. Ska Martes says:

Even with Jet and Sammo, this is the nadir of the kungu new wave of the 90s. Action so undercranked it looks silly, half-assed production value and box-office so bad they never made a part 2

  4. Patrick E. Perry says:

One of the most over-the-top of Wong Jing’s martial comedies. Can’t wait for this new pressing with all the extras. Wong Jing recently remade this movie with an all new cast, though not yet available with English translation.

  5. Andrew Hernandez says:

This was the last “classic” Jet Li movie I watched. I kind of had high hopes for it, but I felt the movie was a bit unremarkable. Maybe I need to re-watch, but I don’t remember there being and crazy and cool fight scenes, the humor was milder compared to other Wong Jing films, and I didn’t care for the cliffhanger ending.

    • JJ Bona says:

I still find it a job to enjoy any HK Jet Li movie lol I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again, Jet Li’s best work is Danny the Dog, Kiss of the Dragon and LW4 =)

      • Ska Martes says:

Hmm thats like saying Rush Hour and The Tuxedo is better than Project A and Police Story but ok!!! Wong Fei Hung 1-3, Hero, The Warlords and Oceans Heaven being worse than the shieeetest of the Lethal Weapons?

        • Andrew Hernandez says:

That’s being a little extreme. Unleashed and KOD are worlds apart from Rush Hour and Tuxedo. (Those 2 movies aren’t the same either and LW4 is the best of that series!)

JJ may have forfeited his HK film card years ago, but he’s not bad!

          • He didn’t say anything about ‘Cradle 2 the Grave’, so we’re all good. 🙂

          • Ska Martes says:

Honestly this is the first time I am hearing that LW4 is the best of the four. I might accept, racial stereotypes aside, it has better bad guys and action than 3 but to say its better than peak Richard Donner/Shane Black of 1 and 2? Whats next. AvP is better than Alien. Halloween 5 The Curse of Michael Myers better than Halloween 78?

            • Andrew Hernandez says:

The reason why Lethal Weapon 4 is my favorite of the series is because the characters have grown, the fun factor has increased, and everything is on a larger scale. Riggs conquered his demons and can now turn his killer instinct on and off like a switch, and has a lot to live for.

Murtaugh after thinking he needed to retire for the millionth time still had another mission in him, and when Riggs is faced with the same epithany, they decide to be defiant of being “too old.”

It was also great to have Riggs and Murtaugh be in the final fight with Wah Sing Ku, and it was believable because Wah is fighting with anger and recklessness, which allows Riggs and Murtaugh to attack him in all directions.

And then the finale was just right. Everything closed off the way it should have and there was no need to do a 5. The idea of a 5 still happening is questionable.
