The legendary, multi-talented Japanese celebrity Takeshi Kitano (Outrage Coda, Battle Royale, Hana-Bi) is heading back to bloodshed with Amazon MGM Studios’ Broken Rage, an upcoming thriller he not only directs, but also stars in.
The first half of Broken Rage follows a hitman, Nezumi (Kitano), fighting for his survival when he’s caught between the police and yakuza. But in the second half, the gritty crime-action thriller takes an unexpected turn, evolving into a self-parodying comedy that retells the same story with a captivatingly humorous touch (via FCS).
The film also stars Tadanobu Asano (Kate), Nao Omori (R100), Shidō Nakamura (Monster), Hidetoshi Nishijima (Mozu: The Movie), Hakuryu (The Good, The Bad, The Weird), Takashi Nishina (Outrage Coda) and So Kaku (Sanctuary).
Broken Rage hits Prime Video (Japan) on February 14, 2025. We expect a U.S. release to coincide with the Japan Prime Video date, but only time will tell. Until then, don’t miss its Trailer:
I wonder if it’ll get a theatrical release or go straight-to-Prime.
Does Prime usually do theatrical movies first? or at the same time?
Depends on the movie.
It’s got pretty good reviews everywhere.
It’s 62′ long and if the first half is almost like a “regular” Kitano yakuza flick, the second half tells the same story but everything goes wrong in a VERY funny way.
Presented in Venise Film Festival out of competition, it was pretty well received by the critics and the public: a movie so short and full of laughs, it just was a big surprise for anyone, I guess, and a good one at that.
Can’t wait for this one!
