Golgo 13 | Blu-ray (Discotek Media)
RELEASE DATE: May 30, 2023
On May 30, 2023, Discotek Media is releasing the Blu-ray for Golgo 13, a 1973 actioner directed by Junya Sato (1975’s The Bullet Train) and starring Ken Takakura (The Yakuza).
This upcoming release marks its first official English-language home video release, and its first time on Blu-ray anywhere.
Based on Takao Saito’s popular Manga and Anime of the same name, Takakura stars as Golgo 13, a professional assassin for hire (Note: In 1977, Sonny Chiba starred in his own live-action adaptation, Golgo 13: Assignment Kowloon)
The action is bloody and advanced for the time, with the gunfights especially well choreographed, and are jumping with interesting compositions and angles. The climatic gunfight features long shots of bad guys attempting to find Golgo in a maze-like ruined city, with his gun coming in to shot to finish them off. These types of locations and the desert are used brilliantly, with some iconic and powerful images. There are two instances of hand-to-hand combat, both with some striking editing. The soundtrack is a classic slice of Toei-style orchestration, with at times a Spaghetti Western tinge (read our full review).
Discotek also plans to release Sion Sono’s 2001 classic thriller, Suicide Club, as well as Takeshi Furusawa’s 2012 mystery thriller, Another.
