“The Matrix” Japanese Theatrical Poster
Director Drew Goddard, who is perhaps best known for co-writing the 2015’s The Martian and directing 2011’s The Cabin in the Woods, is set to direct a 5th Matrix film for Warner.
Lana Wachowski, who created The Matrix trilogy with Lilly Wachowski (the two visionary directors are collectively known as “The Wachowskis”) will executive produce the project.
“Drew came to Warner Bros with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters,” said Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros Motion Pictures President of Production. “The entire team at Warner Bros Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.” (via Deadline).
There’s no word whether the franchise’s original stars – such as Keanu Reeves (John Wick 3), Carrie-Anne Moss (Memento) or Jada Pinkett Smith (The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions) – will return, but we’ll keep you posted.
To most, The Matrix (and its sequels, The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, and to lesser extent, The Matrix Resurrections) was known for its spectacular action scenes and groundbreaking special effects. To others, The Matrix was reponsible for giving us our first taste of Hong Kong action from director Yuen Woo-ping, who choreographed the film’s memorable martial arts sequences. The Matrix is also noted for being influenced by John Woo’s style of action in films such as The Killer and Hard Boiled, as well as a number of Japanese animation titles.

You already did an April Fool’s article. Twice is unusual.
I tried to be positive with the last Matrix film, but it’s to that franchise what Jaws: The Revenge is to its own. There’s no reason to revisit if there’s nothing new or interesting to showcase, and the original cast isn’t getting any younger, so if the lackluster action scenes from last time are an indication, I don’t want to see more of that.
The 4th one was so awful and it bombed so my question is why?
I liked Matrix 4….not as a sequel but as f you to Warners and anyone with incel energy. When trinity became the One there must have been a lot of overweight neckbeards choking on their popcorn in their woke mom’s basement
I got the point of the movie that they were going for a “Meta” “Andy Kaufman” presentation and that they were trying to satirize milking a franchise and how other people didn’t want to make this film, but it all fell flat.
If this movie was supposed to be some kind of prank, it had no panache or wit to it.
Couldn’t they at least have given us non-incel types though some entertainment. Some fun action sequences and the like? I don’t get why you’d want to piss off the people who just want to be reasonably entertained. The idea this was made to troll certain audience members also feels much like Tommy Wiseau trying to convince us he purposely made The Room that way at purpose. Honestly, it was merely a cash grab and for them to say they did it that way on purpose implies a level of passion and inspiration I just didn’t see in the final product.
Regardless of such,I hope Warner lost millions and that Wachowski never directs another film if this is what we can expect from her.

This behind the scenes feature about the training and choreography was more exciting than the actual Matrix 4. It seemed like there was enthusiasm for the rehearsal, but what ended up on screen just didn’t translate well.
