Bad City | Blu-ray (Well Go USA)
On September 19, 2023, Well Go USA will be releasing the Blu-ray & DVD for director Kensuke Sonomura’s Bad City (read our review), his follow up to his 2019 cult hit debut, Hydra.
Kensuke Sonomura is perhaps best known for his work as action director for the Resident Evil games Donnie Yen’s Iceman: The Time Traveller, John Woo’s Manhunt and Baby Assassins.
For Bad City, Sonomura enlists the star power of Hitoshi Ozawa (Score, Dead or Alive) to pay homage to V-Cinema (non-theatrical, direct-to-video titles that dominated the genre film market in Japan in the 1980s).
If Sonomura’s work as a filmmaker in Hydra is an indication of what to expect from Bad City (Paul Bramhall praised Hydra as having a solid narrative combined with a couple of high-quality action scenes, citing they were the best he’s seen since The Raid 2), then this is one anyone should look forward to.

Kensuke Sonomura also did an *excellent* job choreographing the action for 2013’s “Bushido Man,” which I finally watched last month. Highly recommend that one if you enjoyed “Hydra.” Really looking forward to what Sonomura unleashes next.

Man, I wish I could catch this next month – it’d make for a fine addition to my end-of-the-year catch-up. After Hydra, I can’t wait for this shit!
It looks like there’s so much goodness here! V-cinema grittiness, 70’s yakuza film vibes, Intricate fight scenes, Tak Sakaguchi joining in on the fun!
Did anyone recognize Masaya Kato in the trailer? I hope he’s in on the action!
Excellent kick ass movie, that’s all I’m gonna say/write. Oh, just two more things: the casting…kicks ass (Tak Sakaguchi is AWESOME in it), and…BUY IT WHEN IT’S OUT!!!!
