There’s something about a good gaming movie that makes you want to shuffle a deck, roll some dice or find the nearest casino afterwards. The best ones aren’t always about winning, either. They’re about the characters, the pressure, the big decisions and, quite often, the spectacular mistakes.
If you’re looking for some gambling films to watch, you won’t go wrong with these.
Rain Man
Rain Man, released in 1988, is another classic worth putting on the list. Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman play brothers Charlie and Raymond, with a trip to Las Vegas and Raymond’s remarkable ability with numbers becomes central to the card-counting storyline revolving around blackjack, which as we all know is one of the best casino games ever.
Casino Royale
For something with a bit more action beyond the casino floor, Casino Royale is hard to ignore.
Daniel Craig’s first outing as James Bond came out in 2006 and put poker right at the centre of the story. Bond takes on Le Chiffre in a high-stakes Texas Hold’em tournament, with considerably more than the pot riding on the result.
You don’t need to be a poker expert to enjoy it. The card game gives the film plenty of tension, while Bond gets on with the usual business of saving the world.
Rounders
Rounders is another great movie for poker enthusiasts. Released in 1998, this film stars Matt Damon and Edward Norton and tells the story of two friends who fall into the world of underground poker.
This is one of the classics thanks to its character development and portrayal of the lure of high stakes gambling on the psych.
Even if you’ve never trusted your poker face enough to take a seat at the felt, you’ll find this movie very easy to enjoy.
Ocean’s Eleven
Nobody can get disappointed when watching Ocean’s Eleven which combines humour with elegance.
Released in 2001 stars George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and many others. The main target in the film is three casinos in Las Vegas and Danny Ocean gets down to work compiling an outstanding crew that will manage to pull off a great heist.
Gambling becomes part of the background rather than the main plot of the story, but Las Vegas itself is definitely front and foremost.
Molly’s Game
For something based on a true story, try Molly’s Game from 2017.
Jessica Chastain plays Molly Bloom, who ends up running exclusive high-stakes poker games attended by wealthy and famous players. The film moves between poker tables, business dealings and the legal problems that eventually follow.
It’s less about the mechanics of poker and more about the people around the table, which makes it a good choice when you fancy something a little different.
A Few More to Add
There are plenty of others worth digging out in 2026. 21 brings blackjack and card counting into the mix, while Rain Man has one of cinema’s best-known blackjack scenes. For something darker, Owning Mahowny tells the story of a bank employee whose gambling gets seriously out of hand.
And that’s the thing with gaming movies. You don’t have to be a regular casino visitor to enjoy them. Give me a good table, a bit of tension and a character who thinks they’ve got everything under control, and I’m usually interested.
