Did you know, the oldest surviving motion picture film is called Roundhay Garden Scene and is just 2.11 seconds long? It was made in 1888 by French Inventor Louis Le Prince.

For over 100 years, people have watched movies to escape everyday life and be taken into a different world full of interesting characters. From the early silent films starring Charlie Chaplin to the big-budget Harry Potter movies, we love them all.

But one thing we also love is car chase movies.

The adrenaline rush of watching the good guys escape the bad guys is something we keep going back to the cinema for. There’s nothing like a high-speed chase, with cars on fire and impressive stunts.

1. The Italian Job (1969)

It just had to be on the list. This popular British Film sees Michael Caine star in the leading role as he organizes a major gold heist in Italy.

The group of thieves head to Turin and use a major soccer match as a diversion. But of course, in typical movie fashion, it doesn’t go completely to plan.

In iconic Mini Cooper cars, the thieves try to make their escape through the small streets of the Italian city whilst evading police and a rival gang.

In then ends in one of the biggest movie cliff hangers of all time.

2. The French Connection (1971)

This great film not only made the list because of the car chase but because of how it was made.

Gene Hackman stars as detective Jimmy Doyle who has the save the day from the bad guys. In the dramatic scene, they travel 90mph through the streets of Coney Island.

But what makes it more amazing is there was no traffic control for the scenes and they had no permits from New York City.

3. Drive (2011)

Ryan Gosling stars as a Hollywood stunt double who uses his driving capabilities to act as a getaway driver for criminals.

The first scene is in fact a car chase where Gosling has to get the bad guys away from Police cars and a helicopter. You see his driving skills and unique talent for evading arrest.

A very good film in which you see Gosling in a different light.

4. The Fast and the Furious (2001)

The list wouldn’t be complete without a mention of the global franchise.

In the first movie, the late Paul Walker stars as an undercover detective who’s job are to destroy the underworld racing scene. But as you may guess, he falls in love with it.

The movie is great for car lovers and the opening scene is a high-speed robbery on the interstate.
