Today’s Deal on Fire is the Blu-ray for Shadow (read our review), a martial arts epic from director Zhang Yimou (The Great Wall).

The film, which takes places during the Three Kingdoms era, stars Leo Wu (S.M.A.R.T. Chase), Ryan Zheng (Jian Bing Man), Deng Chao (The Mermaid), Sun Li (The Lost Bladesman), Wang Qianyuan (Saving Mr. Wu) and Hu Jun (The Bodyguard).

With Shadow, director Zhang Yimou (Hero) once again pushes the boundaries of wuxia action to create a film like no other, masterfully painting a canvas of inky blacks and greys punctuated with bursts of color from the blood of the defeated. In a kingdom ruled by a young and unpredictable king, the military commander has a secret weapon: a “shadow”, a look-alike who can fool both his enemies and the King himself. Now he must use this weapon in an intricate plan that will lead his people to victory in a war that the King does not want.

I was ecstatic when Flying Swords of Dragon Gate played in IMAX for a week in the states. I hope this gets the same treatment.

The most beautiful movie I’ve seen since…Hero? Yimou’s best movie since…To live? By the way, Shadow isn’t just beautiful, it’s breathtakingly gorgeous.

Hey, I’m not sure if this counts as a “Deal on Fire!” or not, but right now you can pre-order this movie on 4K Blu-Ray for 50% off (about 17 bucks). Which seems pretty sweet for an unreleased movie of this caliber.

    Just throwing that out there.

Thanks Dan! You know, we don’t really consider it a “deal on fire” unless it’s $10 or lower (unless it’s a box set or something). Of course, we’ll have to make adjustments to this rule with all the 4K releases in the near future. Appreciate the input.

  4. Chris says:

When can we expect it in the UK? Was gutted no cinema near me screened it.
