Today’s Deal on Fire is the Blu-ray for Double Team, a 1997 Hollywood actioner from visionary Hong Kong director Tsui Hark (The Taking of Tiger Mountain).

Double Team stars Jean-Claude Van Damme (The Bouncer), Dennis Rodman (Simon Sez) and Mickey Rourke (Year of the Dragon).

Though he’s the nation’s top counter-terrorist, Jack Quinn (Van Damme) wants to get out of the spy game. But on his final mission, he misses his target and wakes up in a place they call the Colony, a think tank for spies who are too dangerous to roam the world, but too valuable to be killed. With his target, the dangerous, enigmatic terrorist Stavros (Rourke) still on the loose and out to get his family, Quinn’s only hope is the flamboyant but deadly gun dealer Yaz (Rodman).

It should be noted that this is the first time Double Team has ever been released in the U.S. as a standalone Blu-ray (it was previously available only in a set). Let’s hope that the film’s companion piece, Knock-off, gets a similar release soon.

I used to think everybody hated Van Damme’s cocaine projects with Tsui Hark. COF taught me that there’s a cult following and that every trashed movie has somebody who loves it.

  2. Sloppy Joe says:

Thanks for the heads up. This is one that’s gotten better over the simply because the action is coherent, and bloody.
That’s thin on the ground these days.

    • JJ Bona says:

Totally. I actually disliked it upon its initial release. I mean, it’s still not a “good” movie, but it’s definitely ahead of its time and has that Hong Kong-style that even Tsui Hark himself couldn’t even repeat.

  3. Andrew Moncrieff says:

I really enjoyed this movie, even though it’s an absolute mess. I liked Knock Off even more though!
