Sammo’ films for yo’ collection? Eureka’s ‘Manchu Boxer’, ‘Paper Marriage’ and ‘Shanghai, Shanghai’ out next week

On December 8, 2025, Eureka will be releasing the 3-Disc collection for Triple Threat: Three Films With Sammo Hung, which will include 1974’s The Manchu Boxer, 1988’s Paper Marriage and 1990’s Shanghai, Shanghai.

Just as the kung fu film seemed to be losing steam as the 1970s came to a close, a new generation of martial arts stars rose to the top of Hong Kong cinema. Amongst them were Yuen Biao, Jackie Chan and the irrepressible Sammo Hung, who found fame as the director and star of The Iron Fisted MonkThe Magnificent Butcher and Encounter of the Spooky Kind. Presented here are three films spanning Hung’s career, from a supporting role in The Manchu Boxer to stardom in Paper Marriage and Shanghai, Shanghai.

In Wu Ma’s The Manchu Boxer, Hung (who doubles up as the film’s fight choreographer) plays the villainous foil to a roaming martial artist who enters a boxing tournament to defeat a gang of bandits. Then, in the action comedy Paper Marriage, Hung stars as a down-on-his-luck Chinese boxer living in Canada who is paid to marry an immigrant from Hong Kong (Maggie Cheung). She wants to gain Canadian citizenship, but he just wants to keep the loan sharks off his back. Finally, in Shanghai, Shanghai, a young man (Yuen Biao) goes looking for his brother, a police officer, in the big city – and also finds himself embroiled with a ruthless gangster played by Hung.

From traditional kung fu to romantic comedy to a tale of cops and crooks with shades of the “heroic bloodshed” films so popular in the 1980s and early 1990s, The Manchu BoxerPaper Marriage and Shanghai, Shanghai exhibit Sammo Hung’s enormous range and chart his rise from supporting player to top-billed star. Eureka Classics is proud to present all three films for the first time on Blu-ray in the UK/US.

Thought at this rate we were never gonna get Paper Marriage over here in the UK and I’m surprised we even getting Shanghai, Shanghai too

The first one (1974…a South Korean movie?) smells really bad.

The second one is a nice but forgettable little romantic comedy.

The last one is just a forgettable action/comedy/spy/drama flick.

    I’ll pass.

  3. Andrew Hernandez says:

I hope this is all region like Eureka’s other recent releases!

I haven’t seen Manchu Boxer or Paper Marriage, so it will be a good time to get acquainted with them. I’ve loved Shanghai, Shanghai and am clamoring for release that’s better than my Universe DVD.

Although I wouldn’t call it a Sammo Hung film since he’s the villain. Yuen Biao seemed to be more of the focus, and Anita Mui just steals the show whenever she’s onscreen.

It will be. As long as it’s a UK/US release, the disc(s) is coded the same (based on my experience so far). But once in a while (after they expanded their label to the US), they throw in a wild card. SHAOLIN BOXERS was one of those that was just Region B (since Shout had the rights). But there’s still a lot of Region B-only titles (such Fatty Dragon, Skinny Tiger, She Shoots Straight) that have yet to see any kind of Blu-ray release. Of course, some of these titles came out before their US expansion. Same exact rules applied for 88 Films and Arrow, in terms of “kung fu” output.

Honestly, if you’re into this genre and haven’t picked up a multi-region player, you’re missing out on a lot of stuff.

You’re probably aware of everything I just commented about, but this info might come in handy for others.
