Kitao Sakura – an up and coming filmmaker who is perhaps best known for 2021’s Bad Trip, as well as a handful of episodes of 2023’s Twisted Metal series  – is directing Legendary Pictures’ live-action Street Fighter, which will be based on the classic Capcom video game of the same name.

In talks to star are Andrew Koji (Warrior, Snake Eyes) and Noah Centineo (To All the Boys, The Recruit), who are said to be considered for Ryu and Ken, respectively.

Roman Reigns (Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw) and Jason Momoa (A Minecraft Movie) are also in-talks for possible roles.

The history of live-action Street Fighter films started in 1994 with the StevenE. de Souza/Jean-Claude Van Damme, which is regarded as one of Van Damme’s highest grossing films of all time, despite being panned by critics and fans alike.

In 2003, there was talks of a Street Fighter sequel with Van Damme (Guile) returning along with Damian Chapa (Ken) and Byron Mann (Ryu). Both Dolph Lundgren and Holly Valance (replacing Kylie Minogue as Cammy) were also attached. Unfortunately, the sequel never saw the light of day.

Instead, 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li was born. Directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak (Maximum Impact), it starred Kristin Kreuk, Chris Klein, Robin Shou (Cyprus Tigers), Michael Clarke Duncan and Hong Kong legend, Cheng Pei-pei (Come Drink with Me).

Another live-action reimagining came in the form of 2014’s Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist, a web series – starring Mike Moh (who played Bruce Lee in Once Upon A Time in Hollywood) and Christian Howard – that was later edited both as a TV series, feature film, and a 2015 follow up, Street Fighter: Resurrection, which added Alain Moussi to the mix.

We’ll keep you updated on Legendary Pictures’ Street Fighter as we learn more. Stay tuned!
