Today’s Deal on Fire is the Blu-ray for Clarence Fok’s Special ID (read our review), starring martial arts star, Donnie Yen (Kung Fu Killer).

The cops can’t control him. The mob wants him dead. And time is running out. Donnie Yen is Detective Chen Zilong – but the criminal underworld knows him as ‘Dragon’ Chen, a dangerous but effective enforcer. When rivalries explode with the reappearance of an old enemy and a brutal murder, the Triads close ranks and unleash a series of executions – with Chen at the top of the list. Undercover and under attack, he has no choice but to rely on a new partner (Jing Tian) and his knowledge of the streets to get out alive. It’s the only chance he’s got.

Special ID also stars Jing Tian (From Vegas to Macau), Andy On (Zombie Fight Club), Zhang Hanyu (White Vengeance), Ronald Cheng (Legendary Assassin) and Collin Chou (Flash Point).

  1. Andrew Hernandez says:

I know a lot of people don’t like this flick, and Paul tore it several new orifices at the time, but I don’t think it’s bad. I liked seeing Donnie Yen play an irresponsible smart-ass cop which was a change of pace to how often he’s played a “by the book” cop.

SPL and Flash Point was more successful with combining kung fu and jiujitsu, but I liked the heavy emphasis of jiujitsu here. Understandably, people who don’t like watching guys roll around on the ground and take forever to submit each other would be bored, which isn’t that dissimilar to how some people don’t like watching realistic Muay Thai competitions on film.

I also liked the high levels of ridiculousness with how it looked like every henchman in China is trying to kill Donnie, and he keeps going after being battered and bruised over and over again. Donnie’s fight with Ken Lo was a nice combination of fighting styles which made me wish they had a big-ass fight scene in the 90’s. I also liked Donnie Yen vs Andy On for how well they utilized grappling.

I suppose The Prosecutor and Flash Point 2 will be a return to what he’s best at.
