RELEASE DATE: November 16, 2021
Director Sion Sono (Tag, Why Don’t You Play in Hell?, Love Exposure), “the most subversive filmmaker working in Japanese cinema today,” unleashes the Blu-ray (also available on DVD, as well as a SteelBook version) for his English-language debut with Prisoners of the Ghostland, starring Nicolas Cage (Outcast, Rage, Face/Off).
Prisoners of the Ghostland (read our review), is set in the treacherous frontier city of Samurai Town where a ruthless bank robber (Cage) is sprung from jail by wealthy warlord The Governor, whose adopted granddaughter Bernice has gone missing. The Governor offers the prisoner his freedom in exchange for retrieving the runaway. Strapped into a leather suit that will self-destruct within three days, the bandit sets off on a journey to find the young woman—and his own path to redemption.
The film also stars Sofia Boutella (Atomic Blonde, The Mummy), Ed Skrein (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil), Tak Sakaguchi (Re:Born) and Bill Moseley (Devil’s Rejects).

I swear that within the next five years China will purchase Disney and have a monopoly on Hollywood.
& the first thing they’ll do is change the spelling to ‘Mickey Mao-se’.
And this will be the beginning of Sono’s end. Fuck Hollywood. By the way, Sono Sion is JAPANESE, NOT CHINESE.
No one said he was Chinese?
Nicolas Cage to appear in a Sion Sono film is 2018’s strangest/coolest bit of movie news so far. Love it.
The real question is which Nic Cage will we get?
Good Nic Cage like in Leaving Las Vegas, Face/Off, Joe, and Frozen Ground?
Bored and sad Nice Cage like in Left Behind, Outcast, And Season of the Witch?
Or batshit maniac Cage like in Vampire’s Kiss, Wicker Man, and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance? (Which Sono could really utilize)
This is gonna work, you’ll see. Sono and Cage’s crazy is gonna rub off on each other and they’re gonna make sweet movie magic.
I like your way of thinking. 🙂
RLJE Films has scored the U.S. rights and here’s the synopsis from them:
PRISONERS OF THE GHOSTLAND is set in the treacherous frontier city of Samurai Town where a ruthless bank robber (Cage) is sprung from jail by wealthy warlord The Governor (Moseley), whose adopted granddaughter Bernice (Boutella) has gone missing. The Governor offers the prisoner his freedom in exchange for retrieving the runaway. Strapped into a leather suit that will self-destruct within three days, the bandit sets off on a journey to find the young woman—and his own path to redemption.
Thank you!
I just want a Blu-Ray.
I was against the idea of Sono Sion to go West, but it should be beautiful and fun (I’ve read a critic saying Sono Sion was making fun of USA’s ridiculous pseudo knowledge of Japan and all the samurai n’ Co clichés, I like the idea).
Saw this in the theaters. Had fun but not Sono’s best or most provoking work. You get full crazy Nic Cage tho!
I tried to like it. I stopped after about 20 minutes. Shame on you Sono Sion not for making a ….. .. …., but for not giving a … about the public.
Go watch/buy Pig instead, it’s Cage’s best movie and interpretation since Joe.
So a movie about a mercenary tasked with rescuing a high ranking official’s relative from a dystopian wasteland, with a bomb set to blow him up if he doesn’t complete the mission in time?
I really want to see how long conversations about this movie can go without any mention of ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK 🙂
