Today’s Deal on Fire is the Blu-ray for Blade of the 47 Ronin, the sequel to Carl Rinsch’s 2013 actioner 47 Ronin. This martial arts thriller is directed by actor/filmmaker Ron Yuan (The Paper Tigers, Step Up China).
Blade of the 47 Ronin features an ensemble cast that includes Dustin Nguyen (Once Upon a Time in Vietnam), Anna Akana (Ant-Man), Mark Dacascos (One Night in Bangkok, John Wick: Chapter 3), Luna Fujimoto (Monster Hunt 2), Koieyama Akira (47 Ronin), Nino Furuhata (Spaghetti Code Love), Yoshi Sudarso (The Paper Tigers), Teresa Ting (She Has a Name), Mike Moh (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Luna Fujimoto (Fat Buddies) and Chris Pang (Crazy Rich Asians).
An evil witch named Yurei, whose ancestor was slain by one of the 47 Ronin, has surfaced in modern day Budapest determined to have his revenge. Yurei seeks to completely destroy all samurai by uniting both halves of the powerful Tengu Sword. A prophecy claims only a descendant of the original 47 Ronin can wield the blade and defeat this great evil. The samurai are shocked when Lord Shinshiro identifies a streetwise New Yorker named Luna as the one who was prophesied. He charges ronin Reo and apprentice Onami with training Luna to be the hero they desperately need. With most of the samurai lords dead or missing, and a traitor hiding among them, the remaining warriors must summon all of their skills as martial arts masters to combat Yurei’s mystic magic and fulfill their destiny.
The first film followed 47 leaderless samurai who seek out revenge against a treacherous warlord who had killed their masters. It starred Keanu Reeves (John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum), Tadanobu Asano (Ichi the Killer), Kou Shibasaki (Battle Royale), Hiroyuki Sanada (Royal Warriors) and Rinko Kikuchi (Shanghai).

A Cyberpunk sequel to ’47 Ronin’?! The first movie had its good moments, but was an overall mediocre film. However, a sequel with futuristic elements…NOW I’m curious!
This movie is ok too much CGI blood and felt like a sci fi channel sequel at times. 4/10
For what this flick is, they did a pretty decent job. The writing especially by AJ Mendez and Aimee Garcia is quirky and fun, and the fight choreography is well handled, often looking like an R rated version of Power Rangers.
It’s a good excuse to hang out at Netflix when there’s nothing else to do.
