Controversial genre filmmaker Albert Pyun retires

"Nemesis" American Video Cover

During the Eighties and Nineties, American Albert Pyun had an impressive run of films that, while not exactly considered classics, did manage to develop a cult following among genre movie lovers. Such films include 1989’s Cyborg, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme in post-apocalyptic sci-fi mode; 1990’s low, low-budget rendering of Marvel Comics’ superhero Captain America; the 1992 cyber-punk thriller Nemesis, which many consider to be Pyun’s finest hour; and the 1997 pairing of Christopher Lambert and Ice-T in Mean Guns.

Unfortunately, it appears that Albert Pyun’s career is coming to a temporary end due to health issues. The filmmaker, who has a constant rapport with both his fans and detractors online, took to Facebook to announce his retirement.

Cityonfire.com wishes Pyun and the family the best in this difficult time. Hopefully with some rest and recuperation, Pyun can return to the world of genre cinema.

Universal also has plans of making the film a franchise for the Fast and Furious star.

According to THR, Soldiers of the Sun is set in a post-apocalyptic future and focuses on a squad of soldiers that searches for a fabled city of gold while on a tour of duty in Mexico, liberating it from an alien race known as Orcs.

‘Bruce Lee Story’ director to adapt comic book ‘Razor’

"The Crow/Razor" Comic Crossover

"The Crow/Razor" Comic Crossover

Film Combat Syndicate reports (via yahoo) that Razor, a comic book by Everett Hartsoe, is being made into a film by Rob Cohen (Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, The Fast and the Furious). Jeff Most (The Crow) is on board as producer. As of yet, there are no stars attached.

Razor, which was first introduced in 1992, tells the story of a resurrected heroine who decides to hunt bad guys after her father is killed and her sister is abducted. Armed with surgically bladed arms and martial arts skill, she vows to take revenge on those who harmed her family.

If you think the story sounds like The Crow, you’re not alone. Even visually, the character is similar – down to the face make-up and dominatrix-style clothing. In fact, Razor has actually teamed up with Eric Draven in a few Razor/The Crow crossover issues.

Who knows, with the The Crow remake in the works, maybe we can expect a movie crossover as well? Let’s just pray that it’s not another Elektra. Check back for more updates.

James Gray to direct Chinese mafia thriller ‘White Devil’

"Year of the Dragon" Theatrical Poster

"Year of the Dragon" Theatrical Poster

James Gray (We Own The Night, Two Lovers) is set to write and direct the crime-thriller White Devil. There are currently no stars attached, but considering the plot – and the talented director – the possibilities are exciting.

According to Deadline, “it’s the story of a white kid who is adopted into a Chinese family, and who rises to the top of the Chinese Mafia in Boston.” Deadline also notes that White Devil is “inspired by the real case of John Willis, a Dorchester native who is known as White Devil John, allegedly a ringleader in a drug-trafficking conspiracy centered around Asian organized crime.”

Think of it as Different Strokes meets Year of the Dragon meets The Godfather, if you will. Stay tuned for more updates.

‘A Good Day To Die Hard’ director to helm real-time action flick

"A Good Day To Die Hard" Japanese Theatrical Poster

"A Good Day To Die Hard" Japanese Theatrical Poster

Director John Moore (A Good Day To Die Hard) is attached to direct a $30 million action film called The Englishman. The screenplay – written by William Wisher (Terminator 2) – is based on Will Scully’s book, Once a Pilgrim. There are currently no stars attached, but filming is scheduled to shoot early next year, so we should hear something soon.

According to Collider, the story follows a mercenary who gets caught up in a military coup in Africa: “Trapped in a hotel together with thousands of innocent civilians and completely surrounded by hostile rebels, he single-handedly takes on the enemy until he can get all the civilians safely evacuated.”

What’s interesting is The Englishman will be shot in real-time (whoopty f–king doo!). What’s even more interesting is the fact that John Moore is still employed after making A Good Day To Die Hard, one of worst action movies of all time. Moore seriously makes Len Wiseman (Live Free or DIe Hard) look like Stanley Kubrick.
