Escape from Mogadishu (2021) Review

"Escape From Mogadishu" Theatrical Poster

“Escape From Mogadishu” Theatrical Poster

Director: Ryoo Seung-wan
Cast: Kim Yun-seok, Jo In-sung, Heo Joon-ho, Koo Kyo-hwan, Jeong Man-Sik, Kim Jae-Hwa
Running Time: 121 min.

By Paul Bramhall

Set during a rarely utilised part of Korean history in cinematic terms, Escape from Mogadishu is the latest blockbuster from director Ryoo Seung-wan. Taking place across 1990 and 1991, it was a point in time when South Korea was only a couple of years into being a democracy, and North Korea was yet to descend into the famine that ravaged its population just a few years later. During the early 90’s both the South and the North had ambitions of joining the United Nations, and thanks to their connections with the African region and its influence in the UN at the time, both sides of the Korean peninsula were looking to curry favour with Somalian President Siad Barre. In reality both the South and the North would be admitted into the UN in September 1991, by which point Somalia had descended into a full-on Civil War which continues to this day.

Seung-wan’s latest chooses to focus on the days leading up to and immediately after the unrest that quickly escalated into all out war, which saw several foreign embassy staff scrambling to escape from the violent rebels, who targeted the embassies perceiving them to be aligned with Barre’s government. On the South Korean side we have Kim Yun-seok (The Chaser, The Priests) as the Ambassador and Jo In-sung (A Dirty Carnival, The Great Battle) as counsellor. Their North Korean counterparts are played by Heo Joon-ho (White Badge, Volcano High) and Continue reading

How To Use Delta 8 Thc Tinctures

How To Use Delta 8 Thc Tinctures

Delta 8 THC tinctures are a more potent form of cannabis that can be used to treat chronic pain, muscle spasms, and seizures. The ability to use it as an alternative for prescription medications is one of the reasons why people love Delta 8 THC tinctures. However, before you start using this product, it’s essential to know how to do so correctly. For our first tip on using delta 8 tincture, we recommend reading the instructions carefully and following them step-by-step before using any form of this medication.

3 Effective Ways to Use Delta 8 THC

Hold It Under Your Tongue

Your first step before using Delta-THC tinctures is to hold it under your tongue for a period of time. This allows the THC in the product to be absorbed into your system and get ready for use. Depending on how strong you want this medication, we recommend waiting until it feels as though there’s enough of a “touch” or sense of flavor when holding it under your tongue that indicates that it will work effectively.

Mix It With Something Tasty

We recommend mixing it with something tasty to mask the taste. For example, you can mix a tablespoon of honey or maple syrup and put that in your mouth for about 15-20 seconds before swallowing. This will help get rid of any bad tastes and make it easier on your throat when taking Delta-THC tinctures orally.

You should also consider using a liquid carrier like coffee, tea, or fruit juice because this makes it much more bearable than if taken by itself without anything else added into it first. You may find that adding things like peanut butter or milk is even better than simply drinking liquids while consuming these THC products since they’re so hard to stomach at first.

Put It On Your Skin

You might also find that putting this medication on your skin is more effective and easier to do than if you were just taking it orally. When doing so, we recommend using a carrier oil like olive or coconut because they’re gentler on the stomach as well. The best way to apply Delta-THC tinctures topically is by adding one drop of product onto two teaspoons of carrier oil before spreading it around in an area where you need relief from pain (such as your back) for 30 minutes at least twice daily.

How Not To Use Delta 8 Thc Tinctures

It’s important to be mindful of how much Delta-eight tincture you can have at any given point in time. It is possible for a person to overdose on THC, which may lead to an unpleasant experience and even the possibility of death. If you’re taking prescription medication or are pregnant, please consult your doctor before use!

How Long Does It Take For Tinctures To Kick In?

It’s not easy to pinpoint how long it takes for tinctures to kick in because the effects are highly individual, but what we can say is that when you feel a certain relief from your symptoms, then it has already started working. When using Delta-T THC Tincture, most people will experience an immediate sense of relaxation and heightened mood; this is typically followed by pain relief starting as soon as 30 minutes after taking the product (although some won’t notice any change until about one hour).

Conclusion

The Delta 8 tincture is a product that offers users the benefits of CBD without THC. You can find it in either oral drops or topical form and use as you would any other medical cannabis product– just remember to be mindful of your dosage, especially if this is your first time trying marijuana-infused medicine.

Kingdom: Ashin of the North (2021) Review

"Kingdom: Ashin of the North" Netflix Poster

“Kingdom: Ashin of the North” Netflix Poster

Director: Kim Seong-hun
Cast: Gianna Jun, Kim Shi-A, Kim Roe-Ha, Jeon Su-Ji, Kim Dam-Ho, Park Byung-Eun, Ji Hyun-Joon, Jung Suk-Won, Kwon Bum-Taek, Hyuk-Bum, Park Ji-Hong
Running Time: 92 min.

By Paul Bramhall

The Korean Netflix series Kingdom has proven to be one of the streaming giants’ biggest hits in recent years, with its Joseon era setting successfully blending zombie action and political intrigue. The Korean film industry had already attempted the same concoction with 2018’s poorly conceived Rampant, so to see the concept play out on the small screen with much more entertaining results was a pleasant surprise. With high quality production values, strong characterisation, and a killer cast which includes Bae Doona, Ryu Seung-ryeong, and Heo Joon-ho, 2019’s six-part premier season was quickly followed by an equally strong 2nd season in 2020. The final episode was notable for featuring a closing scene cameo from Jun Ji-hyun of My Sassy Girl and The Thieves fame, and while fans patiently wait for Season 3, in 2021 a feature length one-off was released to provide some momentary relief in the form of Kingdom: Ashin of the North.

Clocking in at just over 90 minutes, the titular Ashin of the North refers to Ji-hyun’s character who we see for barely more than a few seconds in the final moments of Season 2. It’s been 20 years since Ji-hyun debuted, also playing the titular character in one of the most influential and enduring hits of the Korean Wave with My Sassy Girl, however if anything the existence of this latest entry in the Kingdom universe proves that she’s still just as popular as ever. Her starring role marks the first time for her to headline a production since 2016’s K-drama The Legend of the Blue Sea, with Continue reading

Illustrating Cultural Connections to Asia Through Online Casino Games

There was a time, many years ago, when any Asian media in the western world was an oddity. Often sold in smaller imports with poorly implemented fan-subs, only the largest movies in Asia would traditionally cross the ocean. Today, in the age of Parasite winning the most prestigious award in cinema, this disconnect is rapidly diminishing. Though a lot of thanks go right to the movie industry for this progress, it’s just as important to consider the smaller contributions. Looking at online casinos as an example, we want to explore how developing online culture has helped lead the way to a greater acceptance of Asian media, and what this could mean for the future.

The Games of Online Casinos

The Games of Online Casinos

Now an international industry worth billions, online casino games are enormously varied in what they offer. On the major level, games like online roulette cover a broad range of variations and themes, from classics like European Roulette to new creations like Paddy Power Original Roulette. Though the idea behind ranges of games like this is simply to offer titles and themes to a broad audience, the downstream effects can be much greater than just entertainment.

In the larger online casino ecosystem, the reliance on different cultures for inspiration can have a profound normalizing effect. Games like Sic Bo, for example, were traditionally played in China and rarely featured overseas in western casinos. With online systems, however, it became much easier to host international titles without running afoul of the all-important cost/benefit equation.

Sharing Interests

Though just a small thing, efforts like these made over decades have had an appreciable effect in building bridges between eastern and western media. Each time somebody played a casino game that drew from Asia, they overcame their initial unfamiliarity. Over time, these steps would conglomerate into something more, eventually reaching a point where Asian media was seen in much the same way as that produced at home.

Of course, online casino games play just a tiny part of a much greater whole. We also can’t forget the contributions of anime, video games, or even the recent explosion of J- and K-Pop music in the west. Acting in conjunction with ease of availability as afforded by the internet, finding connections all over the world went from alien to almost humdrum.

International Futures

KCON 2012” (CC BY 2.0) by Peter Kaminski

International Futures

Moving on from this point, the work from online casinos and the million other smaller international media creations is undeniable. Today, Asian dramas on services like Hulu are common, widely loved, and are only becoming more so. The implications for this are immense, not just in viewing habits, but also for the overall framework of how film media operates.

As we’ve seen with streaming films and the move towards simultaneous home and theatre releases, the next few years are likely to be filled with game-changing levels of better integration of Asian media. Though we’ll all appreciate this growth, it’s important to remember all the little steps that got us here. From online casinos to anime, we’ve come a long way, and we’re only just getting started.

Skyhawk, The (1974) Review

"Skyhawk" DVD Cover

“Skyhawk” DVD Cover

Director: Jeong Chang Hwa
Cast: Kwan Tak Hing, Carter Wong, Wang In Sik, Sammo Hung, Nora Miao, Chiu Hung, Lily Chen Ching, Lee Kwan, Gam Kei Chu, Shut-Ma Wa Lung, Kim Ki-ju
Running Time: 88 min.

By Paul Bramhall

The Skyhawk is the kind of movie which opens up with kung fu legends Kwan Tak-Hing, Sammo Hung, and Carter Wong strolling down a countryside path together, an image which close to 50 years later is one which indelibly captures a moment in time which can never be re-created. It’s not long before we witness the equally iconic Korean hapkido master Whang In-shik unleash a flurry of devastating kicks, and all of this is crammed into the initial minutes before the opening credits have even appeared onscreen.

As the 2nd production that Korean director Cheng Chang-ho would helm for Golden Harvest, having come off a hot streak with Shaw Brothers that saw him in the directors chair for classics like Six Assassins and the landmark King Boxer, The Skyhawk bears all the distinctive marks of a mid-70’s GH kung fu flick. This era of the studios output had plenty of recognisable traits – from sounds effects for punches and kicks (and falls for that matter!) that sound like someone knocking on a wooden box, to the focus on Korean martial arts like hapkido and taekwondo Continue reading
