THE MOVIE: As a fiery inferno rages in a liquor warehouse, the Hong Kong fire department is called in to try and control the blaze. That’s the premise of the upcoming big-budget drama As the Lights Go Out, which is set to star Hong Kong heavyweights Nicholas Tse (The Viral Factor), Shawn Yue (Motorway), and Simon Yam (Nightfall). The film will be helmed by Derek Kwok, who co-directed the well-received martial arts drama Gallants.
Albert Lee, CEO of Emperor Motion Pictures, listed the fact that “our firefighters are often the unsung celluloid heroes” as one of the main reasons for producing As the Lights Go Out.
Of course, Hong Kong movie buffs with a sharp memory will recall Johnnie To’s 1997 effort Lifeline, which followed a group of hardworking Hong Kong firefighters. But it’s certainly true that cops and robbers receive the most attention in Hong Kong genre flicks. Stay tuned to Cityonfire.com for future updates on As the Lights Go Out.
