On July 30, 2024, Film Movement is re-releasing the remastered Blu-ray for Shanghai Triad, a 1995 thriller directed by Zhang Yimou (Hero, The Great Wall, Shadow).
The film stars Gong Li (2046), Li Baotian (The Wanderer and the Swan), Li Xuejian (Monk Comes Down The Mountain) and Sun Chun (New Police Story).
When teenager Shuisheng (Wang Xiaoxiao Cuihua) arrives to Shanghai from the country, he is brought by his uncle (Li Xuejian) to work for gang leader Tang (Li Baotian). Tang assigns Shuisheng to aid his girlfriend Xiao Jinbao (Gong Li), a nightclub singer. After a rival gang kills some of Tang’s men, he takes Shuisheng and Jinbao to an island hideout. Here Jinbao forms a friendshipwith peasant Cuihau (Jiang Baoying), while Tang attempts to determine if there are traitors in his ranks.

Film Movement did a great job putting out John Woo’s “Heroes Shed No Tears” last year. It was an excellent HD transfer, great sound and picture quality. I will take a look at this one as well.

A step below his best work like To Live, Story of QuJiu and Raise the Red Lantern. But miles better than the CCP is the bestest Article 20 or Under the Light that had John Wicks cineamtography but none of the action
