I was excited after that trailer, but Paul’s review is quite the red flag.
I love Chen Kaige, and when I first heard about The Promise, I thought he could have made an action epic in the same league as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero.
Instead, that movie was a complete load with very slow moving scenes and sporadic action scenes infested with bad CGI and camera tricks.
Years later, I thought Sacrifice would be the movie to combine great martial arts with great drama. Instead, It was a movie that wastes Vincent Zhao, and has out of place action scenes that don’t match up with the slow and un-engaging drama.
After that, I figured Chen Kaige can not direct an action film.
I certainly don’t mind a Power Ranger looking Wuxia movie, but if Chen Kaige is resorting to the same nonsense that ruined his previous action efforts, this doesn’t give me hope.

Glad that Paul’s review helped you save time and money. Still, I wonder why Sony choose to release it just as a DVD.
Maybe you’ll get lucky and Monk will show up on Netflix. 😉
