This year, Lionsgate Films will finally release 2003’s Kill Bill: Volume 1 & 2004’s Kill Bill: Volume 2 on the rising 4K Ultra HD format.
There’s some speculation if the long-awaited Whole Bloody Affair (Tarantino’s edit of both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 as one film, complete with new footage not seen in the U.S. release) will be part of the release roster, but according to HD Movie Source, we’re expecting the usual, separate theatrical cuts.
Directed by Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction), the Kill Bill saga revolves around a former assassin (Uma Thurman) who wreaks vengeance on a team of assassins (David Carradine, Darryl Hannah, Michael Madsen, Lucy Lui and Vivica Fox) who not only betrayed her, but also left her for dead.
The film also boasts an all-star cast featuring Sonny Chiba (Doberman Cop), Gordon Liu (Shaolin Martial Arts), Chiaki Kuriyama (Battle Royale), Michael Parks (Blood Father), Jun Kunimura (The Wailing), Kazuki Kitamura (Blade of the Immortal), Bo Svenson (The Inglorious Bastards) and Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction) and even Michael Jai White (Triple Threat), if you count deleted scenes.
For Hong Kong and martial arts cinema fans, the Kill Bill saga is noted for having action sequences by legendary martial arts choreographer Yuen Woo-ping (Drunken Master, The Matrix) and sword fight choreographer Tetsuro Shimaguchi.
We’ll keep you updated on this release as we learn more. Until then, enjoy the classic trailers from the films below:
I’ve been waiting for an official bluray release of this since 2006/7. Theres a Whole Bloody Affair HD reconstruction by Milkman floating around the high seas that aims to reconstruct the cut that Tarantino screened back in 2006(?) Its doesn’t add in any extra subplots or deleted scenes or any extra anime, its just the whole movie as originally intended (with the House of blue leaves sequence in full colour and extra violence) before grapey Weinstein saw dollar signs and split the movie in 2. If you cant find the whole saga online, just watch the japanese cut of vol 1, stop it before the spoilers for the vol 2 , put in any version of vol 2, skip the titles and recap and start from the chapter 6 title card.
As a whole Kill bill is easily the 3rd best Tarantino movie , after Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction.
I’ve been holding off on joining the 4K club, but the 4 hour Kill Bill would get me to buy that player.
I thought Blu Rays were supposed to be capable of holding a 4 hour film, but I guess there’s compression issues and other things. I was annoyed when the 4 hour Justice League was split on 2 discs, (and I’ve heard 2 4K discs!)
One would think more people would go for it since we live in an age where people will watch a 10 episode series in one sitting.
