Rupert Sanders, who is perhaps best known for helming 2012’s Snow White and The Huntsman and 2017’s Ghost in the Shell, is the director for the upcoming reboot of The Crow, starring Bill Skarsgård (Eternals), who plays Eric Draven, a role made famous by the late Brandon Lee. The upcoming film also stars Singer-actress FKA twigs (Honeyboy).
The reboot is based from a script by Zach Baylin (King Richard). Producers are Molly Hassell (Terminal), Victor Hadida (Resident Evil), John Jencks (Honest Thief), and Edward R. Pressman, producer of American Psycho, Wall Street and the 1994 original.
A remake/reboot of Alex Proyas’ 1994 cult classic The Crow has been in ‘development hell’ for over several years now. The project has burned through numerous studios and directors, including Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later), F. Javier Gutierrez (Before the Fall) and Corin Hardy (The Hallow).
Also, many actors – including Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg, James McAvoy, Tom Hiddleston, Normal Reedus, Luke Evans, Jack Huston and Jason Momoa – were once attached to the project, but for one reason or another, dropped out or moved forward with other projects.
James O’Barr, the creator of the The Crow graphic novel, has been vocal about the project throughout its pre-production process with the various aforementioned directors: “We’re not remaking the movie, we’re re-adapting the book. My metaphor is that there is a Bela Lugosi Dracula and there’s a Francis Ford Coppola Dracula; they use the same material, but you still got two entirely different films. This one’s going to be closer to Taxi Driver or a John Woo film, and I think there’s room for both of them – part of the appeal of the Crow comics after all is that they can tell very different stories after all,” O’Barr added. Mind you, this was said by O’Barr a couple of directors ago.
The Crow will be released on August 23, 2024. Watch the New action clip from the movie, followed by its IMAX Trailer::
The Ghost In The Shell helmer….
I’ll skip it. The original is too close to me…
And the OST..
And the songs: metal/hard rock/”alernative” rrock/indus (Pantera, Cure, Stone temple pilots, Rollins band, Helmet, Violent femmes,…and my favorite, For Love Not Lisa’s Slip slide melting!
Don’t want to even imagine how that movie will SOUND!
And at lesast restore the original in 4K and put out UHD BD and BD!!!!
Exactly!
It’ll be interesting to see how this turns out. Many films that have been in development for this long get abandoned, but this one actually filmed! I hope it’s like what O’Barr said he wanted.
It’s unfortunate that we’ll never get the director’s cut of the original because of “rights issue” bullshit. The extra footage of Eric Draven absorbing more bullets in the boardroom action sequence and killing henchmen more graphically was great stuff along with his extended confrontation with Fun
boy which showed his weaknesses.
It’s interesting how the book’s ending wouldn’t fly with audiences today since that “twist” has been done to death and ruined by the likes of M Night Shyamalan.
Looks like they doing a Joker solo film. But the Joker from the Suicide Squad. Hard pass
I’m excited for this reboot is it is good obviously. If Letterboxd reviews appear good I’ll check it out. If not I’ll skip it and look forward to an upcoming better release of the original on disc. It’s been quite a while since I’ve seen the original. I’m excited either way, so this reboot is good news to me.
Well, the full trailer is out, and it looks kind of cool, but it shows too much. I don’t know what’s up with this trend of trailers giving away the money shots for free.
I don’t think this is what James O’Barr had in mind, but I’m interested in the execution. I guess it would have been nice if it looked like the original with its limited color palette, but maybe the film makers didn’t want to copy the original too much.
Danny Huston can always be counted on for playing total scumbags. It’s just too bad that he gets typecast.
“Disorder, chaos, and anarchy.” That was one of the least well written lines in the original movie.
For this practice, I thought it went well with the remake, which I’m still rooking for (I hope it’s actually good).
My problem with that line is that those 3 things are not congruent with each other. Anarchy does not mean that crime would run rampant. (Lots of people have different views of what that is, but that’s a 3 hour discussion)
I am wondering if someone took those 3 words and put them in a blender with the new Crow. I want to enjoy the movie as its own thing, but I’m worried when one of the writers whose script was rejected claims that the movie is awful, and I’m wondering what direction it’s all going in.
I’m prepared for this being another movie I’m hopeful for that I’m wrong about.
I’ll be very surprised if this doesn’t bomb.

I was going to give the new Crow a chance, but the overwhelming negative response has given me second thoughts. Original writer Cliff Dorfman, Tony Todd and Alex Proyas have also shit on this movie with the latter proclaiming “I thought the film was a cynical cash grab. Not much cash to grab it seems.” Not the best endorsement.
After Bill Skarsgard proved his action hero chops with Boy Kills World, it’s disappointing that this is his follow-up.
I’d still give it a shot. Everyones’ tastes are so different. And the comparison to the original is always going to kill it. I’m gonna do the safe choice… wait til it comes on one of my streaming channels. =)
