Are you ready for cooler weather to arrive? If so, you’re not alone. It might be hot outside right now, but autumn will be here before you know it.
One of the best things about fall is hunting season. And as hunting season approaches, you’ll need to make sure that all your hunting gear is ready to go. That includes your rifle scope.
This article takes a look at how to mount a rifle scope so that you’ll be ready to kill that trophy buck you’ve been dreaming about all summer. Keep reading the inside scoop.
The Tools You’ll Need
To get started, you’ll need a few basic tools. This includes the proper screwdriver bits for working with Alen head screws and Torx head screws. You’d be wise to invest in a good set of gunsmith bits in order to make the job as simple as possible.
You’ll also need a torque wrench, some Loctite, bubble levels, rubbing alcohol, cleaning patches, a dial caliper, and a good gun vice.
Keep in mind that the right set of tools will help make the job easier and increase accuracy.
Secure the Scope Bases
The first step in the scope mounting process is to secure the bases. A good rule of thumb is to mount the scope as low on the rifle as possible with touching the rifle, so you’ll want to keep this in mind before setting the bases in place.
Be sure to wipe down anything you’re attaching to rifle by applying a thin coat of oil or some other rust preventative, then lock down the bases using your Loctite.
Take your time tightening the screws, alternating them so that they fit right and end up flush.
Mount the Scope Rings
Next, fasten the bottom rings to the base. Make sure they are level, and again remember to use Loctite in order to assure a snit fit that you can still remove later if necessary.
Here is a great source for scope rings.
Double-Check the Ring Fit and Alignment
It’s crucial that the ring fit and alignment is perfect. Check for any burrs left over from the machining process, and use a file to clear them away whenever needed. It’s also a good idea to nine the inside surface of the ring with electrician’s tape to prevent scratching.
You should also keep in mind that misaligned rings can cause stress on the scope tube. To prevent damage, ensure that the ring edges are precisely parallel with the main tube.
Position Your Scope
The final step in the mounting process is to place the scope tube in the mounting rings, then check the position of the scope for your eye when you shoulder the rifle in your most comfortable firing position.
Now you can fully tighten the screws so that the scope is set in its final position. Once everything feels right, you’re ready to go.
