Fearless Hyena 2 | Blu-ray (88 Films)

Today’s Deal on Fire is the Blu-ray (Region B) for Fearless Hyena Part II, a 1983 “Jackie Chan film” directed by Chan Chuen (Energetic 21) for Lo Wei Motion Pictures.

Fearless Hyena Part II was the film responsible for Jackie’s breach of contract with Lo Wei’s production company. Due to “creative differences”, Jackie, along with producer Willie Chan, left production of this film, resulting in both men terminating their own partnership with Lo Wei for a fresh career with Raymond Chow’s Golden Harvest (proven right choice!). The film was eventually released in 1983, but the production was stitched together using body doubles and archival footage of Jackie from his other films (a la Bruce Lee’s Game of Death).

Depending on your source, it’s not clear on who was supposed to originally direct Fearless Hyena Part II. Some say would have been been Jackie’s second directorial debut (after all, he directed the first film); others say, Lo Wei wanted the director’s credit (JC was already gaining box office momentum with Snake in the Eagles Shadow and Drunken Master for Seasonal Films, so this was Lo Wei’s chance to direct Jackie as a true rising action star – possibly mirroring the director’s peak with Bruce Lee – and not the dud Jackie was directing in previous films). In the end, Chan Chuen ended up getting the director’s credit.

Fearless Hyena Part II also stars Dean Shek Tien (Young Lovers on Flying Wheels), Yen Shi Kwan (Blood Child), Kwan Yung Moon (Killer Darts), James Tien (Seaman No. 7), Chan Wai Lau (Fist of Fury Part II), Austin Wai Tin Chi (Burning Ambition) and Pearl Lin Yin Zhu (Dragon Fist).

  1. Kiril Valkov says:

A hard pass on this abysmal movie featuring Jackie Chan, I guess 88 Films run out of good Jackie movies to release, and if Battle Creek Brawl is what some forum members in another place described it as “scraping the barrel”, this here is going all the way down to the bottom of the Mariana trench, where such “classics” as Fantasy mission force, Kung fu Yoga and Bleeding Steel reside.

  2. Ningen says:

His fist is blocking the J and making me think it’s saying ‘Tacky’.

  3. Bruce Jensen says:

Why bother? Aren’t there still at least a few good Jackie Chan movies that could use a good blu ray release? Like Rumble In The Bronx? Or Who Am I? Even The Accidental Spy or Thunderbolt? Well, if Fearless Hyena 2 ends up at Dollar Tree I’d consider buying it then, but for anything more than a couple bucks? No, thanks.

  4. Scott Robinson says:

but if they don’t release FH2, then everyone will say “where is fearless hyena 2″……damned if you do, damned if you don’t. I just wish Bey Logan did the commentary. Thank you god it’s not that slob Mike Leeder.

    • Bruce Jensen says:

Not really sure everyone would say “where is Fearless Hyena 2”, maybe a couple of the most die hard of die hard Jackie fans. As for myself, I’m way more likely to say “where’s a decent blu ray of Who Am I”?

  5. Andrew Hernandez says:

I guess this is for people who think Criterion’s DVD set that includes both Fearless Hyena films is too much.

I’m sure Criterion and 88 are gonna do 2K masters of other lower-than-dirt films like 1973’s Police Woman where Jackie Chan made a regrettable cameo.

  6. Ska Martes says:

Mike Leeder commentary? Not even this will tempt me to buy this “cult” classic then
