Today’s Deal on Fire is the Double Feature Blu-ray for John G. Avildsen’s The Karate Kid 3 and Christopher Cain’s The Next Karate Kid (aka The Karate Kid Part IV).
First of all, we don’t care what anyone says: The Karate Kid 3 is extremely underrated, and is just as entertaining as the first two films, if not more! Sounds like people wanted the same template as Parts I and II; instead they got an over-the-top action thriller with Thomas Ian Griffith and Sean Kanan adding a Cannon Films-like edge to the series! Besides, where else are you gonna see Daniel Larusso dip into the dark side of Cobra Kai?
Now, The Next Karate Kid… we don’t remember much about it, so you’re on your own with that one. Hilary Swank and Michael Ironside is in it, so it can’t be that bad, right?

Thomas Ian Griffith was the only saving grace of Karate Kid III and the film wouldn’t be remembered without him. Everything else was a complete rehash with Daniel constantly getting his ass kicked and having to be saved by Miyagi. It was like he learned nothing from the previous two films.
And the last one just shouldn’t have been made. It did no one any favors.
“Thomas Ian Griffith was the only saving grace of Karate Kid III” For sure. I also thought the end-fight with Sean Kanan was pretty on-point. It’s funny to think that all the films (Karate Kid 1-3) take place within a 1-1/2 year time period. A lot of victories and enemies (and girlfriends) in such a small time frame.
Daniel went through women like a tramp! For it being a one and a half year timeline he sure aged quickly too. (While aging gracefully in Cobra Kai.)
