A modern day take on Crippled Avengers? Not quite, but a good way to introduce Moritz Mohr’s Boy Kills Wold, an upcoming martial arts actioner starring Bill Skarsgård (John Wick: Chapter 4), Andrew Koji (Warrior), Sharlto Copley (Hardcore Henry) and Yayan Ruhian (The Raid, The Raid 2).
Produced by Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead), Boy Kills Wold features action choreography by Dawid Szatarski, who is perhaps best known for his work on Black Widow, Kingsman: The Golden Circle and Ong Bak 3.
Boy Kills World takes place in a bizarre, dark dystopian universe and centers on a deaf and mute character, Boy (Skarsgård), who navigates this depressing world with his otherworldly imagination. Tragedy strikes when Boy’s family is brutally murdered. When his fight or flight instincts kick in, Boy finds himself on a life-threatening trek into the darkly forested jungle. There, he meets a shaman (Ruhian) who takes Boy under his wing and launches him into a cutthroat coming of age journey where he encourages his new pupil to leave his youth behind and pick up the baton as a highly trained assassin.
Boy Kills World also stars Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day), Isaiah Mustafa (Nikita), Famke Janssen (Taken), Brett Gelman (Stranger Things) and Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey).
Boy Kills World is being released by Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions on April 26th. Watch the film’s latest Trailer below:
If Bill was capable of all this, why did they have to make his character in John Wick 4 such a weakling? (Not to mention a fraternal clone of Riccardo Scarmarcio’s character from Chapter 2)
Looks cool though. Wish Samara Weaving wasn’t replaced as she does really well in these roles.
he got so pissed off from getting pissed on in JW4 that he went to train with Mad Dog to exact brutal revenge.
You’re thinking of Marko Zaror who is now known in the US as the guy who got emasculated and pissed on.
This was good escapism for the weekend! Bill Skarsgard did a great job in the action scenes and showed a variety of techniques. Of course his fight scenes with Yayan Ruhian were the best as Yayan really got the best out of him.
Dawid Szatarski Is the fight choreographer here, and he’s been a part of Andy Long’s fight team, so he really knew his stuff and did a great job incorporating all the various martial arts we see. He’s also done fight choreography for The Kingsmen films and Manikarnika.
After Andrew Koji got to shine in Warrior, why does he keep getting shafted in the movies? Snake Eyes and Bullet Train wasted him, and while he plays a funny character here and gets to do a little bit of action, compared to the others, it wasn’t enough.
This year has been more generous with martial arts action than I thought it would be, and I’m glad the trend will continue.
watched the other day: if i wasn’t a sucker for both Yayan Ruhian and Jon Benjaimin i’d say the movie is overall mediocre, but indeed i am so i’ll say the movie is overall fun.
great start, then it drags quite poorly until the final scrap which is handled nicely, but it’s too little too late.
Not sure where it dragged since the action was so frequent. So much so, I welcomed it when there was a talking scene.
Edgelord movie with ironic voiceover so dumb …I imagine this is what gym bros think they sound like but in reality the world is laughing at their fear of seed oils and vegetables. Annoying hyperactive camerawork that detracts from whats happening on screen. The only good bits are with him and his ghost sister. The little kid outacts everyone. I imagine this movie is for people who think Deadpool is too arty
That’s kinda harsh. I didn’t have any of that in mind while watching and typically stay away from “edgelord” and “gym bro” stuff. H Jon Benjamin’s narration gave me a combination of Crazy Taxi and fighting game announcer vibes.
Moritz Mohr and Dawid Szatarski seem to have an understanding of how to properly film and frame action scenes while adding their own dynamics and I could clearly see the movements in the action scenes.
I also have a large dislike of alt-right and “anti-woke” people, but I don’t think Boy Kills World was made for them.
Its clear the choreograhers knew their stuff and it wasn’t over-edited BUT and its a big BUT the camera is going all over the place during a fight, spinning round like a crazy drone operated by someone with Parkinsons (sorry to those who have this – its terrible, my best friend has been dealing with it for years now). Next time just let fake future Crow /Pennywise show his stuff without all the dumb camera moves. I think I’m most annoyed by the fact that they totally wasted Jessica Rothe. Here she is just a pretty face ad abs. If you’ve seen Happy Death Day 1 and 2, you can see she can take average material and elevate it, giving really sensitive performances in a comedy horror movie! But here she’s just wasted. And second on my list of annoyances as you mentioned why is Andrew Koji the comic relief and not the badass sidekick taking down tons of bad guys with kungfu. Instead he’s doing a cosplay of John Wick and Deadpool via Guy Ritchie
I do prefer that the camera stays still in wide shots during fight scenes, but I’m open to creativity, and was willing to give them a chance here.
As for Jessica Rothe, considering how much she trained with Szatarski and got to show off her action chops, she was far from wasted, and will probably get more hard hitting roles.
