The first one that always comes to my mind is OCEAN’S ELEVEN and that’s simply for style and a solid cast, plus a twist I didn’t see coming at the end.
It’s really a guilty pleasure, but I have to say Fast Five. This movie is a mishmash of just about every genre I love, including the classic heist. The chase scene involving a safe became an instant favorite, at least in my book.
It’s a difficult choice. I have lots of love for Bottle Rocket, The Sting, and Sexy Beast, to name just a few. But my favorite at the moment is probably Michael Mann’s Heat — features rich characters, one of the best shootouts ever filmed, and a gritty, memorable telling of the ol’ cops and robbers story.
My favorite heist films are Bottle Rocket and Oceans Eleven. Both have a great story and comedy. And i would also include The Score, Robert De Niro and Edward Norton are awesome in that film.
My all time favorite would be The Brink’s Job. It is an older film, based on actual events.
Is it in poor taste to say that my favorite heist film is The Thieves on a post about The Thieves?? Well, so be it! The Thieves has everything you could ask for in a good cinematic heist – laugh out-loud humor, veering plot twists, a dash of romance for the ladies (lady speaking) and of course ACTION. When there are not one but two prominent action sequences that take place on the side of a building, I’d say the stunt coordinators have done their job well.
Heat: Michael Mann can film a freakin’ shootout. Huge and great cast. Style, style and more style.
There are many great heist movies outthere, but I must say I like The Thieves. The movie has great action, and the chemistry between all the actors are good. I saw it without the English subtitle and it was still good.
One of my favorite heist movies is John Woo’s – Once a Thief. It has comedy, action, heist, & romance! Chow Yun Fat, Cherie Chung, and Leslie Cheung had great chemistry in the film!
Thieves for me it beat out Once A Thief to me. This one was a lot more exciting to me than Once A Thief. No diss to the classic but this is just how it is to me.
I like Usual Suspects the best for it’s funny dialog.
My favorite heist movie has to be the original Thomas Crown Affair. It was the first Steve McQueen movie that I saw and between the acting, direction and the chemistry of McQueen & Dunaway, it’s the perfect heist film. It’s also become somewhat of a cult film and it won an Oscar (althought it was for best original song)
There are any good ones to pick from as heist films tend to be some of my favorite films, but for me I’m going to say my favorite heist film is The Italian Job (2003).
A group of thieves steal a safe full of gold in Italy and make a daring escape with it. Upon celebrating, the group is betrayed by one of their own. Left for dead, most of the team survives. Time passes and now it’s time to go after the traitor and the gold they rightfully (ironic?) stole to be there’s’.
The cast is perfect. It differs the Ocean’s movies in that its not a cast of “beautiful people” playing random roles. The cast fits perfectly to each character. Marky Mark is very good as the leader. Sutherland is great as the old wise one. Statham plays his part as the driver. Theron is good eye candy, and the one who is vulnerable but tough and takes names. Mos Def is hilarious with explosives. Seth Green, come on, we all know he’s a nerd and he’s a lovable one here. And Edward Norton. Classic. Combined the perfect cast with great action, slick execution and good editing so you always know what’s going on and don’t get lost. Plus, the helicopter scene towards the end, was done for real. No special effects, no green screen, no CGI. That helicopter is really in that small space playing chicken with a little Mini Cooper. That alone is awesome.
Mine would have to be Ocean’s 11 – not the two lame sequels 🙂
The first film has a great script, a great cast and a wonderfuly directed film. They should have stopped there.
I’m looking forward to seeing THE THIEVES. It looks like a lot of fun.
I’m going to have to go with Dead Presidents. My grandfather who fought in Vietnam War used to tell me alot of the same types of story’s about Vets getting back and having trouble readjusting to “normalcy” so this movie struck home with me, as being believable to an extent. Plus I’m a sucker for classic 70’s soul music and cool plot to execute a heist.
My favorite heist film is probably The Italian Job (2003). The cast is perfect, the script is very clever, and the direction is spot on. For heist movie to really grab me, it needs to get me excited about the plan, but should also be able to surprise me in the end. Sure enough, this film gave a great set-up, and then did something completely different for the payoff. Just awesome stuff. I watch this one a lot.
I liked Stander a lot. The cast is solid, the story is real, and the style makes it fun to watch. It’s almost like they took a page out of the best, past heist films and found a story that fit the mold.
I agree with some of the others here, that there are more than a few good heist movies out there. But for me, there’s a new little Korean film called, “The Grand Heist” (2012) and it’s now my favorite heist film. It’s directed by Kim Joo-ho, although a first time helmer, Kim directs with surprising assurance, and the film is pretty consistent and engaging in terms of pacing and tone, showing a fine balance between comedy and the tension which builds as things go wrong in the run up to the heist. It also helps that most of the gags revolve around clever wordplay rather than slapstick, except for the line about fart jokes. LOL “The Grand Heist” offers a a different twist on the whole heist scenario, by setting the action back during the Joseon era of the 18th century, following a gang of miscreants set on stealing ice. I found the film to be very entertaining, given the time period of the story. (And different than other heist movies I’ve seen.)
Once a Thief. The movie is funny and thrilling. Whenever I am having a bad day I can always turn to this movie to cheer me up.
Reservoir Dogs.
Why? A simple story, cleverly told. 90% dialogue, 100% suspense.
The Italian Job in a tie with Once A Thief. It’s a coin toss for me. Love them both.
Bar none, my favorite heist film is “HEAT” because the heist scenes are so intricate, the gunplay is amazingly real and with Pacino & De Niro in the mix, what could go wrong?
Heat. There is something heartwarming about a criminal mastermind and a police officer empathizing with each other’s personal problems.
2003 The Italian’s Job has a mixture of action, thrill and romance. And all you need is the sexy and beautiful Charlize Theron. Perhaps, the most drooling moment would be the action sequence with mini coopers.
