Stuntman-turned-Hollywood filmmaker Chad Stahelski (John Wick: Chapter 4) is hard at work with his full-scale reboot/remake of Highlander. The action-fantasy revival will be led by Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) and Russell Crowe (Gladiator).
The new Highlander will be based on the 1986 original, which starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown as immortal beings, hunting down one another and collecting more power. The time-jumping film — with its “There can be only one” tagline — spawned four sequels and three TV series including the popular USA series starring Adrian Paul. Queen memorably provided the soundtrack for the original movie (via Deadline).
If you’re familiar with Stahelski’s signature John Wick–style action, expect meticulously choreographed violence that moves with a dancer’s rhythm. But this being the world of Highlander, look for far more swordplay, than an endless rain of bullets, tucked between hand-to-hand combat scenes.
The film features an all-star international cast that includes Jeon Jong-seo (Ballerina), Marisa Abela (Back to Black), Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy), Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond), Dave Bautista (Master X: The Ip Man Legacy) and Max Zhang (Ip Man 3, The Brink).
“Such great themes of immortality, love, and identity are all wrapped up in such colorful mythology. I can’t think of a better property that gives the opportunity to create interesting characters, mythic themes and action set pieces,” Stahelski told THR.
Amazon MGM Studios/United Artists is releasing Highlander in 2027 or 2028. Until then, check out a couple of images from the film, featuring your first look at Henry Cavill:

Henry Cavill? OK I’ll pass. Bring back Brandon Routh and fire Zack Snyder forever: give ’em to Marvel as “gifts”.
I want this to actually go forward and succeed. The Highlander franchise was never perfect, and it can use a real update. Especially with a modern approach to swordplay and the different ways the lore can be explored.
Considering that he’s not Superman or Geralt anymore, Henry can use a new role.
No.
The first movie has badly aged, it’s so “bad 80’s”!
I’ll keep my Yoshiaki Kawajiri’s version!
It sucks to read about Henry Cavill’s injury that’s pushed filming back. I really want this to be cool. Hopefully Max Zhang is better presented here than Donnie Yen was in Highlander 4.
There can be only one John Wick.
That would have been a good headline. lol
I believe when Anna De Armas used a katana in Ballerina, that was a preview for what the action in the new Highlander is supposed to look like. And I’m all for it!
With Dan Laustsen back as D.O.P. with Stahelski you know this will at least look amazing.
Goddamn right! That man knows how to shoot a movie!
