Hey, Joe… where ya goin’ with that gun in your hand? ‘The Rip’ director teases his own version of ‘The Raid’

Back in 2014, an English-language remake of Gareth Evans’ 2011 cult martial arts classic The Raid was in-the-works with director Patrick Hughes (Expendables 3) taking the helm, but during stages of development, the project became stuck in an on again/off again status.

Along the way, Hughes dropped out for reasons unknown. Then it was announced that Frank Grillo (Beyond Skyline, Wolf Warrior 2, Boss Level) and filmmaker Joe Carnahan (Smokin’ Aces, The Rip) were re-launching the remake from a newly revised script by Carnahan and co-writer Adam G. Simon (Man Down).

Then in 2022, Carnahan left the project, and Hughes hopped back on, as reported by Deadline:

“Netflix is tapping Hughes to direct The Raid remake with Michael Bay and XYZ Films on board to produce. Evans will exec produce along with Range Media Partners. Hughes will co-write the script with James Beaufort (The Peeps vs. Buddytron). This version is set in Philadelphia’s drug-infested ‘Badlands’, an elite undercover DEA task force climb a ladder of cartel informants to catch an elusive kingpin.”

Cut to today – with Hughes’ remake in limbo – Carnahan is hinting he’s still open to making his “own” remake of The Raid (via Playlist):

“I wrote on spec with the idea that if we did it – I wanted to make it modular so that if we couldn’t come to an arrangement with the actual The Raid, that we could take those elements out and it would be my own script,” he revealed.

“And that’s what wound up coming to pass, that we couldn’t reach an agreement with the producers,” he continued. “And so, I just pulled it, and it became its own thing. In many ways, because of its conceit, it’s better than the original. Just the way it’s written, it’s a much more fundamentally emotional film than the original. You feel these things with these characters very, very innately. And I’d love to be able to do that, man. And listen, any time that Frank and I can reunite and get back on the floor together is gonna be a joy.”

Heck, if Frank and the producers come on board, all that’s left is for Scott Adkins to join – fresh off his role in Joe Carnahan’s latest Netflix actioner, The Rip.

We’ll keep you updated as we learn more about The Raid remake.

Some movies are just not meant to be remade …the raid is one of them …

Sounds like another hollywood cashgrab to me . Ill pass on this one

  2. JJ Hatfield says:

As far as hollywood is concerned there IS no movie not to be remade even if the original is still fresh in people’s minds, or because of it.To be fair the U.S. is not the only country to see big dollars in a big ripoff, ahem, I mean remake, of course.

  3. Ican says:

it’s not necessary to remake the raid since Dread is already done. Hollywood should remake the raid 2: berandal just saying.

  4. OpiumKungFuAsshole says:

A blessing in disguise, mmmmhhhhahahhahahahahhaha! Now use all that stress and time wasted on The Raid 3 and it’s going to knock Hollywood on its ass again.

  5. DShiflet says:

Frank Grillo is no longer involved. He posted on his Twitter page awhile back that he watched the original Raid again, and decided there was no way he could do it justice so he was pulling out of the project.

    Donnie Yen for leading role

  8. Is anyone actually going to be in this other than Frank Grillo? I have this image of him just running around an empty building by himself, kind of like an existential reimagining of ‘The Raid’.

    • Andrew Hernandez says:

I think audiences would jump for joy at that Waiting For Godot idea!

I really like Carnahan’s premise, and the two of them have a good rapport. I would have preferred someone younger in the lead role while Grillo played his commanding officer. (Aaron Taylor Johnson, Logan Lerman, Jovan Adepo)

I hope the supporting cast includes some COF favorites to play off of.

  9. aerosniff says:

Grillo sucks (what an actor!), Carnahan has made ONE good movie in his career (the EXCELLENT Narc), and Hollywood died during the 90’s. Next!

  10. Marijan says:

forget the remake of raid please do something else don’t ruin the movie

  11. Andrew Hernandez says:

The project that won’t die! I want Carnahan’s movie to happen, but it’s coming across as the jokes about George RR Martin taking too long to deliver.

Scott Adkins wanted to be in The Raid 3 before that faded from memory, so if he and Carnahan have a great rapport, they can get this movie made, that would rock. I’m sure Scott Adkins and Frank Grillo would play off of each other well under Carnahan’s direction.

  12. Typo says:

    “it’s better than the original”

I love Marc. The rest of his movies are pieces of shit, even the ones I haven’t seen.

  13. Typo says:

    Narc, not Marc.

But Marc is a cool guy.
