After 10+ years of being in limbo, Warner Bros. and director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) are finally moving forward with Edge of Tomorrow 2 (aka Live Die Repeat and Repeat), the sequel to 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow.
Both Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning) and Emily Blunt (The Fall Guy) will be reprising their roles from the first film.
“We have an amazing story! It’s incredible! Way better than the first film, and I obviously loved the first film. Tom is excited about it, and Emily Blunt is excited about it. The big question is just when we’ll do it. But it’s not an if, it’s a when”, Liman told Collider back in 2017. The filmmaker told the same source the sequel would “revolutionize how people make sequels”.
Last we heard, the sequel was being written by Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, the duo behind the Jesse Owens biopic Race. Since then, frequent Cruise collaborator Christopher McQuarrie (Mission: Impossible – Fallout) has also contributed to the script.
For years, Edge of Tomorrow 2 stalled mainly because the first film, Edge of Tomorrow, did not make strong enough box office returns to justify a big budget sequel, and despite interest from Cruise, Blunt, and Liman, the team never locked a script that clearly improved on the original while also fitting everyone’s busy schedules, so the project kept getting pushed back and never moved into production.
Despite its box office fumble, Edge of Tomorrow was praised by both critics and viewers alike. The film involved a military officer (Cruise) who is brought into an alien war against an extraterrestrial enemy who can reset the day and know the future. When this officer is enabled with the same power, he teams up with a Special Forces warrior (Blunt) to try and end the war.
According to reports, if everything goes smooth around Tom Cruise’s hectic schedule, Edge of Tomorrow 2 could shoot as soon as this fall.
🔥 Footnote: Edge of Tomorrow is based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s Japanese novel All You Need is Kill, which was also the movie’s title until it was changed to Edge of Tomorrow for its theatrical release, only to be re-titled and remarked again as Live. Die. Repeat for its home release (hence, the title of the sequel, Live Die Repeat and Repeat). Where’s my Macross movie?
We’ll keep you updated on Edge of Tomorrow 2 as we learn more.
UPDATE: According to Collider’s Steveb Weintraub (via World of Reel), the sequel is not currently in active development, despite periodic reports suggesting otherwise.
