Cult filmmaker, writer, novelist, and composer S. Craig Zahler (Bone Tomahawk) is reuniting with his Brawl in Cell Block 99 and Dragged Across Concrete star Vince Vaughn for a new period gangster film titled The Bookie and the Bruiser.
Co-starring alongside Vaughn is Theo James (The Divergent) and Fred Melamed (A Serious Man).
The film centers on two WWII veterans, Rivner (James), a Jewish man, and Boscolo (Vaughn), an Italian American, as they return home and struggle to rebuild lives they no longer feel part of.
Hot Take: If you’re not familiar with Zahler’s work, seek it out. His films are practical, slow-burning, and brutally violent, only without the usual Hollywood gloss. Even visionary filmmaker Park Chan-wook has taken notice of his talent.
The Bookie and the Bruiser will start shooting in Toronto this April.
We’ll keep you updated on this project as we learn more. Until then, check out the trailer for 2019’s Dragged Across Concrete:
