“Master Z: Ip Man Legacy” Theatrical Poster
Another chapter within the Ip Man “extended universe” (we hate those words) is heading your way in the form of a planned sequel to Yuen Woo Ping’s 2018 Ip Man 3 spin-off, Master Z: Ip Man Legacy.
Returning from the first film is Max Zhang (The Brink, SPL II: A Time for Consequences), who’ll reprise his scene-stealing role as Cheung Tin-chi, a character who originally appeared in Ip Man 3 with Donnie Yen. As of now, there is no official word if legendary martial arts choreographer Yuen Woo-ping (The Thousand Faces of Dunjia) will be returning in the director’s chair (via AFS).
Master Z: Ip Man Legacy also starred Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny), Tony Jaa (xXx: Return of Xander Cage) and Dave Bautista (Kickboxer: Vengeance).

I enjoyed Master Z a lot, but it just didn’t have the same kind of impact that the Ip Man movies did. I like the character of Cheung Tin-Chi, but centering a movie around him wasn’t the best idea. Max Zhang is awesome, but he doesn’t strike me as the kind of actor that can carry a movie on his shoulders, at least, not yet. I’m keeping an eye on this one, though. Hopefully, there will be less wire-work.
I wasn’t big on the wirework either, but whenever the fights were grounded, it was a lot of fun.
I’m a Max Zhang fan, and would like to see where he takes the character. I’m waiting for him to acknowledge how wrong he was to beat up kung fu masters in Ip Man 3.
Oh, yeah. The stuff that was grounded was phenomenal, and I really loved the fight with Batista at the end of the film. The stuff that was good was really good, but it was kinda off-balance with the stuff that wasn’t so good. That being said, though, I’ve seen worse spin-offs, and there was enough to like about Master Z that warranted a purchase from me. Besides, getting to see Michelle Yeoh kick some ass again is always a plus.

It seems I am in the minority, but I enjoyed the first film.
Master Z was an OK movie. But they missed the point. He supposed to have his own fighting style, and he only used it at the end of the damn movie. Wtf!?
Hopefully this sequel would allow him to have his own fighting style. Because master Z 1 just had him fighting randomly.
