In case you missed the Deluxe Edition (which is now out of print and sold out at regular price), 88 Films has now released a standard Blu-ray (Region B) set for Yuen Woo Ping’s Tiger Cage action trilogy, which includes 1988’s Tiger Cage, 1990’s Tiger Cage 2 and 1991’s Tiger Cage 3.

Note: This standard edition does NOT include the booklet or poster. It includes a standard slipcase (not a rigid slipcase, as seen in the previous Deluxe Release).

Collectively, the series is headlined by Jacky Cheung (High Risk), Carol Cheng (Armor of God II: Operation Condor), Simon Yam (Final Run), Donnie Yen (Raging Fire), Rosamund Kwan (Armor of God), Cynthia Khan (Eternal Fist), Sharla Cheung (Cheetah on Fire) and Michael Wong (Knock Off).

Co-stars include Cheung Kwok-Leung, Lo Lieh, David Wu, Robin Shou, Ng Man Tat, Michael Woods, John Salvitti, Leung Kar Yan, Irene Wan and, Vincent Lyn, who has confirmed recording a commentary with Hong Kong film historian/Tai Seng Alumni, Frank Djeng.

As stated in our review: Tiger Cage opens with a drug-bust that includes one of the best HK-style shoot-outs ever seen. Yuen Woo-Ping obviously takes a page from John Woo but clearly departs from Woo’s style by not using slow motion and allowing the characters to leave the confines of the warehouse the bust starts in. The shoot-out gets taken to the bustling streets of Hong Kong where cops and Triad members alike climb across neon signs, run through traffic, and dive off of freeway over-passes. It’s incredibly intense and brilliantly directed by Yuen Woo-Ping.

  1. Andrew Moncrieff says:

Just FYI it’s actually a boxset of all THREE Tiger Cage movies as per Vincent Lyn.

I hate waiting for that kind of boxes.

P.S.: Kungfubob O’Brien continues to rule.

Not Kung Fu Bob, apparently. New stats credit Sean Longmore. Which is probably for the best as KFB seems to be getting a little pooped-out lately, just crowding every cover with randomly-arranged, hastily-drawn bodies and heads. I thought the TIGER CAGE art was his at first because it’s yet another overcrowded kitchen-sink collage that seems to be all the rage these days, but then I noticed a fair bit more shading, a less garish colour palette, and non-human details in the work than one generally sees in Bob’s art. Mind you, nothing improves on original posters by original artists in my eyes, but I suppose this is the path we’re on now to sell more units to noobs! 🙂

  4. Ron says:

Is this just a UK release or will it also be available in the US?

  5. RJ says:

If released individually, I would say Tiger Cage 2 is my favorite one, but I’m happy to get the boxset no matter the region. This is a great way to promote all three films and I know 88 will kill it .

  6. steve says:

Also frank djeng has confirmed he is doing a commentary on tiger cage 2 as well

  7. rubens says:

    Region B? This I like!

  8. Aerosniff Someglue says:

Just watching the first one. Really good picture…but the Cantonese sound is atrocious (as shitty as the French DVD from 2009). The dialogues countain a strident that makes the movie barely watchable…
