Decades later, the iconic films of Hong Kong legends Sammo Hung and Jackie Chan continue to inspire a new generation of stuntmen and filmmakers. Case in point: Unlucky Stars, an independent martial arts comedy directed by and starring Dennis Ruel.

As you can tell from the title, the film takes particular inspiration from the Lucky Stars series of films that Sammo popularized in the Eighties. Expect tongue-in-cheek humor and bone-crunching fight choreography.

You can scope out the teaser trailer for the film on YouTube. The cast includes Dennis Ruel, Ken Quitugua, Sari Sabella, Jose Montesinos, Giovannie Espiritu, and Vladislav Rimburg.

Updates: 2nd teaser. | BTS feature. | Full trailer. | New trailer.

BREAKING NEWS: We just received word that a distributor has been found for Unlucky Stars. A sales package for international markets are ready, and plans to distribute the movie in North America are underway. Stay tuned for more details! (via Paul Bramhall)

I wish they could just make a good martial arts films like in the 80’s and early 90’s without some bullshit happening. Funding problems, ego’s, lack of interest. Whatever the problem may be, the Chinese need to keep their reputations high for having great choreography. It’s becoming a lost art to computer effects. Well so far I can tell you a well thought out choreographed sequence is much more entertaining to me than a bunch of CGI’d robots fighting around like a video game. I always thought the legends would be making more MA films since they should know how by now, and making them better than ever. I think people need to get off their lazy computer addicted asses, and get down to the local Martial arts club or Gym and get some use out of themselves besides melting their eyesight away on the computer everyday. I’m tired of all this eye candy, bring the physical aspect to fight films back. Action actors need to remember how to get their shirts dirty again, and do it for the people, not the dirty money paycheck. If shit keeps going on like this we’ll never see an Asian Expendables because there is too much jealousy and ego in the way.

Mr. Jackson could you provide details about where you get your info from?
I’m not aware of the jealousy but I’m curious about all the drama you’re talking about.

That’s great news! I was “lucky” enough to get to see this movie at its LA premiere and I’ve been dying to watch it again since. I’m so happy that it’s finally getting distributed; This movie really deserves it.

Also, I wanted to point out that this movie’s getting screened at the “Action On Film” Festival and they’ve received four nominations including Action Film of the Year! Screening dates will be posted soon on their Facebook page.
