The Paper Tigers (read our review), an independent kung fu/comedy from writer/director Tran Quoc Bao (The Challenger), featuring fight choreography by Ken Quitugua (Unlucky Stars), is now streaming on Netflix!

Our very own Paul Bramhall says: “The Paper Tigers is a resounding success in proving that a small budget is no obstacle when you have the right talent both in front and behind the camera. With his first full length feature Bao Tran has crafted a narrative where the story beats land just as effectively as the actions ones, and the result is a kung fu movie with genuine heart and characters who we can all relate to in some way.”

In The Paper Tigersa dead-beat dad, a fat insurance scammer and an MMA coach find themselves in the middle of a gang war when they must avenge their kung fu master’s death but first… they need to call in sick at their 9-to-5’s.

The Paper Tigers stars Alain Uy (True Detective), Ron Yuan (Blood and Bone) and Mykel Shannon (Undisputed 3: Redemption).

The film also stars Matt Page (Odd Thomas), Andy Le (The Real Target), Park Jae-suh (The Big Short), Raymond Ma (Lethal Weapon 4), Yoshi Sudarso (Power Rangers Ninja Steel), Peter Sudarso (Power Rangers HyperForce), Gui DaSilva (On the Ropes), Mark Poletti (Made in Chinatown) and Yuji Okumoto (The Karate Kid, Part II).

This looks very much in tune with Unlucky Stars, and I like that. Hopefully it plays about well.

    • Ah Choung says:

Unlucky Stars is more in the style of Winners & Sinners and Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars. The Paper Tigers has more of the Gallants (2010), Cobra Kai and Girls5Eva. Both really good movies, just different

      • ToryK says:

Spot-on and I totally agree. They’re both fantastic watches, but they’re going for going for different things. Unlucky Stars was a straight-up 80’s Hong Kong throwback, this was a martial arts dramedy.

Side-note: I got a big kick out of getting to see the Martial Club strut their stuff. I wouldn’t mind seeing that crew do a feature with Tran. There’s definitely something there.

Looks good. Hope they kill the guy that killed their sifu and not just beat’em up then decided not to kill him cause that would make them “just as bad as he is”.

    Looking forwad too it

  4. David Rees says:

It’s a great, fun film, well acted with fights that move the story along.
Agree, its great to see the Martial Club guys in it, they certainly deserve more exposure.
