Visionary director Park Chan-wook (Decision to Leave, Old Boy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance) has started production on The Ax (aka I Can’t Help It), an adaptation of Donald E. Westlake’s best-selling crime novel of the same name.
The upcoming thriller stars Lee Byung-hun (I Saw the Devil, Age of Shadows) and Son Ye-jin (The Negotiation, The Truth Beneath).
The Ax follows a middle-aged manager who is laid off. Eighteen months later, and still unemployed, he puts a new spin on his job search — with agonizing care, he finds some men (spoilers ahead) in the surrounding area who could take the job that rightfully should be his, and systematically kills them. Transforming himself from mild-mannered middle manager to ruthless murderer, he discovers skills he never knew he had — and that come to him far too easily (via Amazon).
Co-stars include Park Hee-soon (The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion), Lee Sung-min (Handsome Guys), Yeom Hye-ran (Special Delivery), Cha Seung-won (Beleiver) and Yoo Yeon-seok (Steel Rain 2: Summit).
We’ll keep you updated on The Ax as we learn more. Until then, we leave you with the Trailer to one of our favorite Park Chan-wook films:
I haven’t read the book, but it sounds interesting. It sounds almost like Falling Down if D-FENS decided to become a serial killer and take time plotting his crimes. Park Chan-Wook can definitely do something interesting with this concept.
