“Made in Chinatown”: Only 20 Years in the Making

Mark Wiley is accustomed to challenges. And as the founder of his own martial art style, not just abstract ones – but also the kind that can potentially land you in the hospital with a concussion or broken limb.

Long before that, he suffered from decades of chronic pain and debilitating migraines.

But it wasn’t until he wrote and produced a feature film that he truly understood the phrase “no pain, no gain.”

The idea for the plot that eventually became Made in Chinatown occurred to him way back in 1999.

“I came up with the premise while visiting New York’s Chinatown,” Wiley says. “I tried to enter a ‘private’ Chinese club and was told, ‘Chinese only.’ Disappointed, and hungry, I walked across Canal Street into Little Italy for lunch and wondered what would happen if a Chinese guy tried to finagle his way into a private ‘Italian’ club. From there, I came up with the story of a Chinese guy who wants to join the mafia to win the respect and love of an Italian girl – in other words, he wants to ‘get made.’ I wrote a screenplay quickly, and spent the next ten years rewriting, revising, polishing, and trying to get someone, anyone, with contacts in the film industry to read it.”

Eventually, Wiley managed to get the screenplay in the hands of a New York actor who was currently working on a film with some “Sopranos” alumni that he was hoping to cast in Made in Chinatown. The project finally started to gain some traction, but what followed was a hard-knocks lesson in the pitfalls of the film-making business, including financing issues, visa issues, and contractual disputes.

“I managed to put together a terrific cast and used that to secure some funding from overseas,” Wiley says. “Primarily from investors in China. Then, when Trump was elected president, the political and economic situation between the US and China shut down the financing. By that time, I already had contracts in place with the cast, and according to the Screen Actors Guild, I either had to shoot the movie or pay them their agreed upon fees anyway. So, I had to scramble for new funding. An old colleague introduced me to a group of investors who put in enough financing to cover production, and we were all but assured of a substantial tax credit to cover the rest. The tax credit never came through, and so I went through several more rounds with additional investors, all of whom promised to provide financing and even came to the set, met the cast, and hung out. But when it came time to write a check, they were nowhere to be found.”

Wiley finally secured enough funds to get the movie made and took out small business loans to pay for all the post-production himself. 

“The post-production process alone has taken three years,” Wiley says. “But here we are, with a well-received finished film that was an official selection of several film festivals and won 5 awards, including ‘Audience Choice,’ ‘Best Actor’ (twice) and ‘Best Stunts’ and ‘Best Action.’ 

Wiley describes Made in Chinatown as Goodfellas meets Ip Man. Lise Romanoff, CEO and Managing Director of Vision Films, the movie’s distributor, comments, “At first look, Made in Chinatown, is a fun and funny fish-out-of-water escapade with the most amazing action sequences! Just below the surface, however, is a very timely and important message of self-acceptance and pride in one’s family and culture. Audiences of all kinds are going to love this film!”

Made in Chinatown is now available across cable and streaming platforms in North America including Amazon, Google Play, Vimeo, Xfinity, Fios, Spectrum and Direct TV. Vision Films is looking for international partners in Europe and Asia to pick up the film there as well.

For Wiley, Made in Chinatown is the culmination of a dream that resulted from a great deal of childhood trauma.

“I began life three months premature, weighing only one pound, nine ounces,” Wiley says. “My first months were spent in an incubator. I suffered below average bone development, respiratory issues, and infantile spasms. Doctors believe this resulted in the musculoskeletal pain and headaches that have plagued me since birth.”

As a boy, Wiley’s poor health led to bullying issues. Finally, after one-too-many bloody-noses, his mother enrolled him in Tae Kwon D classes. Although his physical issues made learning martial arts a challenge, Wiley discovered a passion for them. 

“I was fascinated with the ‘magic” of the martial arts,” Wiley says. “Especially the things I saw in old kung fu classics like Kid with the Golden Arms, The 36 Chambers of Shaolin, and Martial Club. The training sequences, super energy powers, secret techniques and the like were my version of Harry Potter.”

Wiley eventually went on to travel the world seeking instruction from masters in over 20 Filipino martial arts, completing the curriculum of seven styles, as well as various forms of Chinese kung-fu. Currently, he is a senior disciple of Ngo Cho Kun (Five Ancestor Boxing), head of the International Beng Hong Athletic Association and the Philadelphia Shenwu Association, and the founder of his own system called Integrated Eskrima. 

The fact that he is not Filipino but has studied with many famous masters and created his own Filipino fight art has led to some interesting, and at times tense, situations.

“On my first trip to the Philippines, I had to spar ten opponents,” Wiley recounts. “By then, I had written a book about the art of Eskrima and these practitioners wanted to see if was real or fake. We wore helmets and one padded glove and fought full contact with sticks. We all sustained some bruises, but nothing brings two martial artists – or in my case, me and ten other martial artists — closer than a nice sparring match.”

During a later trip to teach a seminar in Europe, Wiley was warned that some local martial artists wanted to “test his skill.” Sure enough, one large man challenged Wiley to “block my strike.” The man swung his stick full force at Wiley’s head. Wiley side-stepped to avoid the blow and finished with the tip of his stick at the man’s neck. The crowd loved it. “Now,” Wiley said. “It’s my turn.”

Aside from his practice of the martial arts, Wiley’s chronic health issues have led him on a lifelong exploration of healing systems. “I spent the better part of the 1990s traveling the world to meet with traditional healers – acupuncturists in Japan, qigong masters in Taiwan, bone setters in Malaysia, faith healers in the Philippines,” he says. 

His journeys have taken him to down some interesting and amusing rabbit holes. “One time while doing research on martial arts and spirituality in Kuala Lumpur, I took a meeting with a master of the Malaysian martial art of Silat who I was told e could ‘shape-shift’ into an eagle,” Wiley says. “I brought my friend Ron with me from Japan so we would videotape the meeting. We were introduced to the master. He didn’t strike me as anything extraordinary. He started doing some martial movements and breath exercises and making strange sounds. After a few minutes, he contorts himself in such a way, with a bent body and arms outstretched, to resemble a bird in flight. Ron and I look at one another like, ‘big deal.’ Then he turns and looks directly at us, lets out a loud squawk, and before our eyes he turns into an eagle! I swear, his body morphed, his skin turned into feathers, he grew a beak, everything! We looked at each other in shock. Then he went back to normal. Thankfully, we had the photos and video to prove we weren’t crazy! Well, in those photos and on that video, the Silat master looks like a normal man making funny noises. You had to be there. It was an experience I won’t forget.”

Over the years, Wiley’s desire to alleviate his own suffering motivated him to earn a Master’s Degree in Health Care Management, a PhD in Alternative Medicine and a doctorate in Oriental Medicine. He currently mentors others to improve their health and learn martial arts out of his home in suburban Philadelphia. He does plenty of zoom classes for those too far to meet in person.

Now, after twenty years of struggle, Wiley can add a “filmmaker” to his list of accomplishments.

Made in Chinatown is a passion project that is at once the very best and absolute worst experience of my life,” Wiley says. “But it has opened so many doors for me – new friends, new skills, and hopefully, a first-step in a filmmaking career.”

The 1970’s blaxploitation genre gave us some of grindhouse cinemas most recognisable names – from Pam Grier to Richard Roundtree – but perhaps the most popular of all blaxploitation stars would be the man who’d become known as Fred ‘The Hammer’ Williamson. However by the 1980’s the genre was waning, and like many a star who found themselves inseparable from the genre that established them, soon the offers started to dry up. By the 1980’s stars who found themselves in such a predicament usually had 2 choices – head to Indonesia (Chris Mitchum we’re looking at you), or head to Italy. Williamson chose the latter, and soon found himself in various post-apocalyptic flicks, including such brilliantly titled productions as 1990: The Bronx Warriors, Warriors of the Wasteland, Rome 2033 – The Warrior Centurions and Warrior of the Lost World.

In 1987 Williamson finally got a chance to take a break from the post-apocalyptic landscapes by way of, ironically enough, an Italian director who was making a movie in Hollywood. A year prior George P. Cosmatos unleashed the Sylvester Stallone flick Cobra, complete with one of the most memorable taglines in history – Crime is a disease. Meet the cure. Back in Italy, director Stelvio Massi clearly saw potential in a remake of Cobra (or perhaps more accurately, figured he’d try to copy it as closely as possible), and with the Italian Stallion moving onto bigger and better things (well, Over the Top), Williamson was the obvious choice. The Hunt opens with a scene of a frail elderly lady approaching a long-deserted mine entrance located up a secluded mountain, the torrential rain setting an ominous tone as she lays out a numbering of offerings to the dead. The camera watches the ritual from the darkness of the tunnel, as ghostly groans emanate from somewhere in the unseen depths, indicating a restless spirit that perhaps met an untimely death and still seeks revenge. The horror genre leanings of the scene are understandable when you realise the director at the helm is Lee Woo-cheol, who gave us the 2005 ghostly horror Cello. It’s taken Woo-cheol 11 years to deliver his sophomore feature, and while what he’s spent those years doing is likely to remain as bigger a mystery as the ghostly happenings of his debut, the important thing is he’s back.

However the unsettling tone of the opening scene doesn’t last any further, with a lightning strike hitting the side of the mountain near to the mine entrance revealing what appears to be gold. After contacting the local police, a cop played by Cho Jin-woong (Me and Me, Believer) confirms to the lady that it’s just pyrite, or fool’s gold as its more popularly known. Of course, in truth it’s the real deal, and Jin-woong turns out to not exactly be a the most morally upstanding cop on the force. In addition to a myriad of responsibilities and obligations, university life is also full of temptations, especially for the students who have only started their independent life and are ready to try everything being away from home. As a result, they end up acquiring harmful habits of spending sleepless nights, leading a sedentary lifestyle, overindulging in junk food and coffee on the go, and even harmful substances abuse. All of these lead to excess weight, obesity, problems with blood circulation, joints, heart, and other organs, indigestion, and consequently, stress, burnout, fatigue, cognitive impairments, and serious psychological disorders. Only the conscious realization of the link between all these issues can force a student to take decisive actions in regulating their own life and preventing negative consequences.

Luckily, some minor modifications of the lifestyle can instill healthy habits that will help you to stay away from various physical and mental illnesses and disorders. Our useful tips will help you to get started.

Get Enough of Sleep

Numerous home assignments, constant tests, and demanding professors make it impossible to go to bed early and get the needed eight hours of sleep. On the other hand, it is next to impossible to reject the invitation to parties that keep you up all night every Friday and Saturday. However, sufficient night sleep is a must for staying healthy physically and mentally.

Lack of rest slows down all the processes in your body, reducing the levels of energy, which causes declined cognitive abilities and consequently, leads to irritability, anxiety, depression, and other mental disorders. While you are sleeping, your body recovers and your brain recharges. As a result, metabolism gets normalized, memory improves, and mental clarity enhances. Naturally, such a refreshed state makes you more productive in your studies. Thus, it is very important to get your most required 7-9 hours of sleep per day instead of studying all night.

It is good to establish a regular sleeping schedule and make a habit of going to bed and waking up at the same time every day. It may seem hard at first, but when you get used to it, you will understand how beneficial such a pattern is to your productivity. Having received your full rest, you will be ready to finish all the work in the morning, before the classes.

If some pressing tasks still prevented you from going to bed before midnight, take a nap in the afternoon. Of course, it will not compensate for the lost 4 hours of healthy night sleep. Nevertheless, even a 15-minute nap during the day can be beneficial for your body and restore a good portion of your energy levels.

If you are still not sure if full night sleep is really needed, consider the fact that sleep deprivation has been scientifically proven to have a direct link to appetite increase. You do not want to gain a couple of extra pounds, do you?

Watch Your Diet

Generally, a proper diet is not only about maintaining an appropriate weight. It also concerns all the nutrients and vitamins necessary for your body and mind to function adequately. Skipped breakfast, coffee, and high-calorie snacks on the go, pizza delivered in the middle of the night, and nights out with friends in fast food restaurants are common eating preferences of university students. But if you want to stay healthy, you need to make everything on this list a taboo.

Never skip breakfast. It is the most important meal of the day that provides you with energy for the rest of the day, or at least until it is the time for lunch. Even if you are late for classes, make sure that you can have an energy bar, a banana, or a handful of nuts while you are getting there. Generally, healthy snacks must always be around so that you could have your dose of nourishment even when you are away from home.

By the by, make a habit of going to the grocery store once a week to stock your room with healthy products. Avoid foods high in calories, fats, and sugars, opting for the ones rich in carbs, proteins, vitamins, and other nutrients. You must always have granola, yogurt, eggs, fresh fruits and vegetables, wholegrain pasta, cereals, and nuts around. Check any dietary blog to know how to shop smart.

Eat regularly and do not skip meals. Having a substantial breakfast and a big portion for dinner is not the best option for your stomach. Generally, it is advisable to eat small-size servings but more frequently, about 5 times a day. So, make your meals regularly and do not skip them.

And please, do not eat when stressed, bored, or worried, while studying or watching TV, or just for company. Mindless eating when you are not really hungry will only add you a couple of extra pounds.

Drink Properly

A glass of beer or a cocktail in a company of friends once a week is good. However, do not overindulge in alcohol, which has a myriad of harmful effects even if you are not dependent. To start with, hangovers will not help you excel in your studies. On the contrary, you get slowed down cognitive functions and impaired abilities to perform a lot of actions. At the same time, alcohol does not have any nutritional value, contains high levels of calories, and decreases the organism’s ability to absorb nutrients and burn fat, which again brings you closer to excessive weight. It does not mean that you should bury your social life and quit drinking altogether; just keep it moderate.

Instead, drink a lot of water to keep hydrated during the day. This substance possesses truly magic properties and nourishes the body with all the necessary elements. It has a positive influence on your skin, complexion, nails, hair, joints, muscles, liver, and stomach. Water flushes your system, enhances energy levels, and improves sleep. A glass of water before every meal will also help to control your appetite and consequently, weight.

Be Physically Active

Regular exercise is one of the most important habits to develop if you want to stay fit and healthy. The sedentary lifestyle of a university student is detrimental to muscles, joints, blood circulation, and brain functioning. As a result, you gain extra weight, obtain numerous physical ailments, and get mental and cognitive impairments. To compensate for long hours of sitting at the lectures, in the library, and at home writing your countless essays, you need to devote several hours a day to physical exercises. Go to the gym regularly or join a sports team. If you are not much of a sportsperson or have some personal reasons for disliking gyms, you may indulge in a simple workout routine at home while watching an educational vlog or listening to a scientific podcast. Refrain from driving a car and using public transport. Instead, walk or cycle to classes or on other errands. Generally, try to move as much as you can. Your body and your mind will be grateful for your activeness.

Enjoy Your Life

Staying healthy means not only the absence of pain and full-fledged body functioning. Mental wellbeing is similarly important. Overwork and stress typical for many university students may cause a lot of serious psychological disorders. To avoid detrimental effects, you need to relax, destress, and recharge at least once in a while. Therefore, amidst all the responsibilities and obligations you have in the university, do not forget to have fun.

Devote sufficient time to your hobbies. Doing what you like to do and what brings you pleasure and satisfaction will give you positive emotions and let your mind have rest from the challenges of studying.

Spend time with family and friends. Socializing with people you like can fill you with positive emotions and new energy. Besides, it is a good opportunity to speak out whenever you feel overwhelmed.

Learn something new. Take an art class, visit a local museum, or go to a neighboring city at least once a month. Meet new people and make new friends. The flow of new ideas and thoughts is a perfect way to recharge and revitalize not to get stuck in everyday routine.

Take pleasure in whatever you do. Try to find the positive side in anything you are up to, even the most boring and challenging research paper you were assigned to write in a day. But do not sink too deep into all the university obligations. Just do not forget to have fun.

Keep Healthy!

However, in the middle of all the fun you get from life, do not forget about healthy habits of sufficient sleep, proper diet, drinking water, and keeping physically active. In addition to it all, listen to your body and never neglect it when it starts asking for help. Make medical tests, appointments with a physician and dentist to check a habitual routine every year. Go to see a doctor in case of the slightest sign of malady. Remember, that your health is in your own hands.

Opening with a shot of Frank Grillo’s (Jiu Jitsu, Beyond Skyline) character literally being chosen from a Streetfighter II style character menu, Boss Level starts as it means to go on, with Grillo abruptly being woken up by his bed companions scream as he narrowly dodges a machete. He barely has time to catch his breath after dispatching the assassin before a helicopter hovers in front of his window, and a guy armed with a Gatling gun proceeds to spray his apartment in a sustained barrage of bullets. Miraculously Grillo survives that attack as well, and soon enough he’s throwing himself out of his apartment window to the street below, where we quickly discover things aren’t going to get a whole lot easier.

Thankfully Grillo’s narration provides us with some context. We learn that he’s found himself waking up to the same day for, so far, 147 times (or ‘attempts’ as the text onscreen puts it). He doesn’t know why, but there’s a whole variety of characters out to kill him, with only the fact that he’s ex-special forces imbuing him with the skills to survive longer than the average Joe. When we meet him he’s gotten himself as far as about 1:00pm, and he’s gained an inkling that his predicament could have something to do with a shady scientific project his ex-partner (played by Naomi Watts – Eastern Promises, Mulholland Drive) was working on. Ever since the success of Bong Joon-ho’s The Host in 2006, Korea’s had an on-again off-again relationship with the creature feature. Putting the social commentary aside that Joon-ho’s Han River dwelling monstrosity represented, subsequent efforts have seen the likes of mutant boars in the 2008 horror comedy Chaw, deep sea mutations with 2011’s action thriller Sector 7, and killer wolfdogs in 2012’s murder mystery Howling. In 2018 the monster flick took a break from being set in contemporary Korea, and was transported back to the Joseon era with Monstrum, which sees the cause of several gruesome deaths taking place in the mountains rumoured to be that of a vicious beast called (you guessed it), Monstrum.

Like many a Joseon era set thriller, Monstrum utilises the tried and tested formula of a trusted general who’s put his violent past behind him being called up by the emperor for one last job. In this case it’s looking into if the beast is actually real, or if it’s just a scare mongering fabrication by duplicitous palace officials wishing to usurp him from the throne.
