This is a must have film! Lau Kar Leung allowed this to be a showpiece for Hsiao Hou! A tremendously talented young actor/ stuntman/ and one hell of an amazing martial artist. Add some wild acrobatics, a few weapons and the sheer power and grace and that is Hsiao Hou!
Mad Monkey Kung Fu (Feng Hou) is probably one of the most exciting releases by Dragon Dynasty in years. As an avid fan of Kung Fu movies, particularly,Hsiao Hou and Lau Kar Leung, I am excited to learn that this movie has an official release from Celestial Pictures. Hsiao Hou, in my humble opinion is probably the most talented star, acrobat, and actor contracted by Shaw Brothers movie studio in its heyday. I enjoy all of the movies he starred in because of the skill, humor, stunning acrobatics and boundless energy he brings to every scene. Strangely, the Dragon Dynasty web site lacks an official announcement of the Mad Monkey Kung Fu DVD, and rarely showcases this talented actors face on any of its DVD covers, even when he is in a lead or supporting lead role — as in the case of My Young Auntie and Legendary Weapons of Shaolin. Gordon Liu is curiously featured on the cover of Legendary Weapons of Shaolin even though he had less screen time than Hsiao Hou, the movie’s focus. I will purchase this release of Mad Monkey Kung Fu, but I sincerely hope that there is a special feature extra about the actor Hsiao Hou, or I will be sorely disappointed. I’m looking forward to seeing other releases, such as Lady is the Boss and Fake Ghost Catchers which are nearly impossible to find, the former moreso. It is utterly shocking that Hsiao Hou did not become the next Jet Li or Donnie Yen and hopefully, if this actor is still around we’ll eventually see another movie, rather than the small movie roles of the 90s. or perhaps as an action director again. Hsiao Hou is a KUNG FU LEGEND.
Yeah, there has been a lot of negative discussion about the DD covers. Like you said, some of them make no sense. The crazy thing about these covers is they put A LOT of effort into the graphic design/photoshop work to make them look good; YET they make it appear as if they never watched the movies to begin with.
Good or bad covers, the important thing is that they’re officially released and we really can’t complain.
The DVD Covers have been questionable, indeed. You’re right, it is certainly nice to have an official release. I have seen the mandarin and the cantonese version of this movie, but the one I ordered says “Dubbed” and I’m not sure what language it is dubbed in. The English dubbing sounds ridiculous so hopefully Celestial was mindful enough to include Mandarin and Cantonese audio. It was filmed in in Cantonese, then dubbed in English and Mandarin. We shall see!
I picked this one up with the other three but haven’t watched it yet. Looking forward to it! I love monkey-style kung fu. So far I watched “Executioner From Shaolin” and “Martial Arts of Shaolin,” both of which really good, but I’m hoping this one blows me away after reading what E. Hughes had to say about it. 😀
this movie was one of the best kung fu comdies i have seen and the fight choreograpy by lar kar leung was fantastic showcasing the true showmanship and kung fu skills without wire work as being a truly worth wild kung fu movie
I wrote a review of this release of Mad Monkey Kung Fu on Amazon.com if anyone cares to read it. And nope, no special features which was really disappointing, but the picture is flawless which allowed me to notice a few details I hadn’t paid attention to before.
What is your user name on amazon.com? =D
The same as here. I believe you can look up the new release For MMKF and mine is the only review there.
