On July 11, 2023, Sony Pictures is releasing the Blu-ray for Knights of the Zodiac (aka Saint Seiya: The Beginning), a live-action adaptation of the 80s-era manga and anime series Saint Seiya.

Seiya (Mackenyu), a headstrong street teen, spends his time fighting for cash while he searches for his abducted sister. When one of his fights unwittingly taps into mystical powers he never knew he had, Seiya finds himself thrust into a world of warring saints, ancient magical training and a reincarnated goddess who needs his protection. If he’s to survive, he will need to embrace his destiny and sacrifice everything to take his rightful place among the Knights of the Zodiac.

The film is headlined by Mackenyu Arata (Rurouni Kenshin: The Final) and Madison Iseman (Jumanji: The Next Level) and directed by Tomasz Baginski, who is perhaps best known for executively producing The Witcher, as well as his special effects-driven short films.

Co-starring are Sean Bean (Goldeneye), Famke Janssen (Taken franchise), Nick Stahl (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines), Diego Tinoco (On My Block) and martial arts star Mark Dacascos (One Night in Bangkok). Veteran stuntman and martial arts choreographer Andy Cheng, who was the fight coordinator of Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten, is on board for the film’s fight sequences.

    Check out this COF review of Mark’s Only the Brave. https://cityonfire.com/only-the-brave-2005/

  2. Gagalagaille says:

    Main characters:

    Seiya = Japanese
    Ikki = Japanese
    Shun = Japanese
    Shiryû = Japanese
    Hyôga = Russian

    Saori Kido = Athena’s reincarnation = Japanese

    Looking at this casting, it’s gonna be whitewashing and woke crap.

    I hope it’ll crash. I won’t even look at the trailer.

    • Tory says:

      I’m so tired of that word – “woke”. It doesn’t even mean anything anymore. If anything, the “woke” thing to do would be to go for an all-Asian cast. You’re spouting nonsense within nonsense.

      • Scott Robinson says:

        I feel you Tory! I don’t care if they’re all philipino, all white, all green, all Korean… I want good movie. Not bad movie! woke snowflakes, go home!!!

    • Real says:

      Athena is not Japanese. The entire story is cultural appropriation of European culture anyways.

  3. Aerosniff Someglue says:

    It’s gonna be a whitewashing fest. It’s gonna be a reunion of has-beens. It’s gonna suck (wanna bet). It’s gonna flop hard (wanna bet?), like Dragon ball evolution, Fist of the North star,…

    Nick Stahl (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines), Diego Tinoco (On My Block) and martial arts star Mark Dacascos

    Yes, woke still means something. Have you seen at least the posters of 2021 Cyrano and other woke revisionist pseudo Jane Austen movies?

    And wanting ASIAN actors to portray Japanese characters of a more than 35 years old manga (not just one) and anime (not just one), still much more known and famous in Japan and Asia, Europe, South America and Co than in the U$ is not a woke thing at all, it’s the least they can (but won’t do).

    So go home yourselves.

    By the way, YOU are the snowflakes.

    • Real says:

      Athena isn’t Asian and you are appropriating European culture. Athena is White with dark hair and blue eyes. Stop stealing European culture.

      • Aerosniff Someglue says:

        Oh my, that trailer is AWESOMEly atrocious. I’m so happy it’ll be crushed and completely forgotten in a few months if not weeks!

        At least they didn’t steal all the different manga and anime. That’s called adaptation…too bad it looks like another crapfest like G.I. Joe meets Mortal kombat meets the wall!

        Freakin’ hilarious!

  4. cuttermaran says:

    @ Aerosniff Someglue are serious? I feel like you’re always trolling for fun XD

  5. Andrew Hernandez says:

    I’m always going to laugh when people have a knee jerk reaction to projects like this, and cry “Oh no! Americans are playing Asians! That’s racist!”

    If it was something like Dragon Ball Evolution, I’d get it, but from what I can see here the white actors are playing white characters. My only concern is the movie looks like it was made by a computer, and I hope there’s a good balance of live action fight choreography and CGI like in Shang Chi and Dragon Tiger Gate. (Yeah, I said it.)

  6. Kiril Valkov says:

    The only question I have is: is Sean Bean’s character survives? 🙂

    Part of the original show is on YouTube. https://twitter.com/WTK/status/1651001925725220865

    Never mind. They’re cancelling screenings. https://twitter.com/MichaelToole/status/1656762924415823874

  9. Aerosniff Someglue says:

    Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
    I told you!

    HUGE WORLDWIDE FLOP!!!!

  10. Andrew Hernandez says:

    I actually gave this the time of day on Netflix, and it’s not very good, but not horrible either.

    Mackenyu is physically a great talent with the way he combines karate with gymnastics, and I wish he would get better roles in North America. At least good supporting roles in cool action films. Even though the film missed the mark, there was potential for this to be a fun little film.

    One problem was how they took what should have been a fun and ridiculous movie like Power Rangers and Super Infra Man, and made it serious to a point where they were treating the material like it was The Glass Menagerie. Sean Bean and Famke Janssen looked uncomfortable trying to be serious in a Super Sentai-like project.

    I cited Dragon Tiger Gate as the kind the film that successfully combined live fight choreography with computer effects and looking more like a proper King of Fighters adaptation that the actual one. This movie doesn’t quite get it as there were moments of decent action and then it looked like the characters were trapped in an old PC game.

    It’s unfortunate as this actually could have been better than it was.
