  1. DoctorFromGallifrey says:

Definitely will get this especially since its titled Vol.1 indicating were getting more. Really liked the international 4 volume vintage collection releases glad were getting something similar in the US

  2. Ulric says:

    Yes yes and yes

  3. Bruce says:

Sounds interesting but I’ll definitely be waiting to hear about special features before I’ll even consider buying this set. It’s kind of nice that between Eureka!, 88 Films, Shout Factory, etc. all releasing improved versions of classic Hong Kong movies we now have the luxury of being picky with our purchases!
By the way, I’m curious as to what brought on this apparent renewed interest in these old Hong Kong movies? I know in the early to mid 1990s the “discovery” of Jackie Chan by western audiences generated further interest in the films not only of Jackie, but Jet Li, Chow Yun Fat, John Woo, etc., but what initiated this current resurgence? Why is there a market for these movies now where there didn’t seem to be much of one a couple years ago? Is it a matter of rights to these movies having been newly cleared, was it the Yip Man movies with Donnie Yen getting some attention internationally? How did young people who weren’t even alive when Jackie was making his best movies get interested in him enough for so many companys to be releasing competing versions of his films?

    • JJ Bona says:

Bruce, those are all great questions that I think about myself. My guess is there’s hardly anything “fresh” coming out of Hollywood, so film snobs from all generations are branching out to older films like these (I think the same goes for Italian crime movies as well). In a world of special effects, remakes, Marvel movies, etc, I’m sure films from this era – especially Hong Kong films – are a breath of fresh air!

    • Ska Martes says:

alot of classic movies were remastered by fortune Star for Chinese streaming sites in 4k around 2017 onwards. I’m assuming they then license these movies to whichever boutique label is interested

    • Ulric says:

The special features are in now. They are really good so you should check it out on shout factory.

  4. Ulric says:

Well let’s see Jackie Chan is Iconic like James Dean. You may not have been Alive to know about him but once you do know about these people as human beings we become curious and want to explore their body of work. So that is part of it as well Bruce. P.S. it is culturally enriching as well and fun

  5. Terry says:

battle creek brawl in cantonese and mandarin dub? yesss!!!

  7. American Ninja Man says:

Personally I keep hoping for a release of Snake In The Eagle’s Shadow. These films while some are decent, it still seems odd we didn’t get this on Blu ray yet. It’s odd, despite having a video store in my house, most of my Blu rays are 80s Action, horror and Hong Kong. And yet this one still eludes me. In fact this, God Of Gamblers and many shaw brothers movies elude me as they haven’t been released on Blu ray. Very disappointing.

    • ‘Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow’ received the deluxe Blu-ray treatment from 88 Films back in 2021, you can read the announcement over at blu-ray.com here.

‘God of Gamblers’ is getting a similar deluxe treatment from 88 Films and will be released on May 1st (here’s a link to our own post about the release).

      • American Ninja Man says:

I’ll be picking up God Of Gamblers asap. As for Snake In The Eagle’s Shadow , If I can get it under 40 bucks or so. No joke it goes for 52 dollars and up. Terrible.

I’m going to make a bold statement, at the risk of MPM saying I’ve been drinking again, but Snake In The Eagle’s Shadow is Jackie Chan’s best old school Kung Fu flick. Better than Young Master,Drunken Master 1, Fearless Hyena,Dragon Fist,Hand Of Death and Dragon Lord. Simply put the best training montage ever. I get why it’s so expensive on ebay, but I will wait and see if I can cheaper copy on Blu ray.
