GWAILO'S REVIEW: Tung Fei (Jackson Lau) is a bad man. A Manchurian nationalist involved in, and now a captain for the Japanese Army, he spends his days sexing the generals wife. Upon being caught, Captain and general exchange blows, the captains the more mighty. The general bites it and, left wounded from the tussle, Tung high-tails it out of camp by horse and hits the scenic Chinese country scape. weak and tired from his escape, he is found prostrate by a mountaineer and his daughter, Ironic (Shu Qi). As they nurse him back to health, Tung asks the elder if he may stay on and lend a helping hand. The 'good' captain now gets a case of 'mountaineers daughter syndrome' and can't suppress his lust for the gorgeous Ironic. It's not meant to be though, she belongs to a strapping young bachelor named Little Tiger from a neighboring village. Tung Fei begins to show his true colors as he secretly dispatches Little Tiger and winds up marrying the distraught Ironic; her father pressuring her and now Tung Fei being master lover #1. Tung, as we know, turns out to be a bastard of a hubby and treats Ironic and her daughter, Tigress, (guess Little Tiger managed to get a few shots of before his demise) like garbage. Tung discovers his old mistress, the generals wife, is now a prostitute in a nearby village and begins spending the family income on her services. Telling the whore of his father-in-laws hidden stash of dough, she persuades him via vagina to take the $ and run so they can elope. Being an ill character, he sets out to grant his mistress' request, but will he succeed? Over Ironic's dead body...

Chan Kwok-fai, action director on such films as The Three Swordsman and Arrest the Restless, competently helms this cheaply made Taiwanese production. The beautifully filmed Chinese landscapes and minimalist approach work very well but the story is wholly contrived and for the most part, pretty boring. Shu Qi appears here in an early role as the heroine of the title and though the film is listed as a 1999 production, I suspect it was made earlier and release upon Shu's later success.

There's not much to the film, or Shu's meaty role for that matter, but for her fans, there is some fleeting Shu Qi T&A. Do with it what you will and enjoy it while it briefly lasts. There's little else on view but glimpses of the grand Chinese countryside.
