As cinematographer on Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, it’s safe to say Wally Pfister had a key part in shaping the stylish visual palette of the Dark Knight saga. Now, the talented director of photography is breaking out on his own to helm the science-fiction film Transcendence. But Pfister isn’t completely flying solo: he’s brought along regular Nolan players such as Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphy, not to mention the star power of Jack Sparrow himself, Johnny Depp.
Transcendence tells the futuristic story of a brilliant scientist (Depp) who becomes a slightly more, well, digitized version of himself after a run in with an anti-tech terrorist group. The first trailer is online now and already has movie buffs talking. Could this film be the beginning of a fruitful directing career for Pfister, or will it be too reminiscent of early 90’s techie-thrillers like The Lawnmower Man and Ghost in the Machine to strike a chord with modern audiences?
