If you’re a fan of the legendary Sammo Hung (The Bodyguard), get ready to be happy, because the Hong Kong legend is currently putting finishing touches on Legend of the Pearl (formerly The Return of Lucky Stars).

Directed by Hung, Legend of the Pearl is an upcoming follow up to the classic Golden Harvest series that peaked with 1983’s Five Lucky Stars, 1985’s My Lucky Stars and Twinkle, Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars. In fact, production photos have popped up online and show Hung in his trademark 70s/80s “bowlcut” haircut.

The film also stars Eddie Peng (Operation Mekong), Tony Leung Ka Fai (League of Gods), Yuen Qiu (Kung Fu Hustle), Chin Siu Ho (Vampire Cleanup Department), Danny Lee (Run and Kill) and Yuen Wah (The Bodyguard).

Check out a recent Teaser Poster for Legend of the Pearl (via AFS). The film’s 1st Teaser Poster looked more Lucky Star-ish (click here to see it), but only time will tell what Sammo truly has in store, so stay tuned. For now, the video below has some scenes from the film (featuring Hung’s trademark “bowlcut”), followed by the original Trailer for Five Lucky Stars:

Let me guess, they’ll all be young, pretty, uncharismatic mainlanders nobody has ever heard of?

    • rob says:

Exact. as always it will be useless young celebrities like in the jackie chan films of the last few years. useless and unwatchable films.

  2. Mike Leeder says:

but of course why when he’s making movies for the Chinese market would he want to hire anyone from China…i mean that would be like American movies using Americans! That would never happen right?

The man just unveiled the company and announced his plans, he told me that he’s open to seeing people from anywhere and looking at Sammo’s past track record i think we can expect him to be selecting some good people

  3. Paul Bramhall says:

I’ve never heard ‘Winners and Sinners’ being referred to as ‘Five Lucky Stars’ before…was it only called that in Japan?

    • mpm74 says:

Yes, it’s the Japanese title. Thought it would work in better context with the article. This way, we wouldn’t get someone saying “Winners and Sinners didn’t have the word ‘stars’ in the title”….

  4. Z Ravas says:

Am I the only one who has trouble telling the movies in this series apart? As much as I enjoy them, they tend to blur together. All I can remember for certain is ‘Winners and Sinners’=Jackie Chan on rollerskates, ‘My Lucky Stars’=Andy Lau in spandex and a finale at a Japanese amusement park, and ‘Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars’=Sammo Hung vs. Richard Norton in one of the great onscreen fights.

    • JJ Bona says:

Lol thats exactly how i remember them with those exact point of references.

    • Paul Bramhall says:

Man, I actually remember these 3 flicks pretty clearly, as I picked them up as they were released by the Hong Kong Legends label back during my formative years of watching HK cinema. 😛 They released ‘My Lucky Stars’ in 2002, ‘Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars’ in 2003, and ‘Winners and Sinners’ in 2004 (yes – the first of the three was released last). Am I going crazy though, or is Andy Lau not in ‘My Lucky Stars’?

      • JJ Bona says:

He’s not in LUCKY, but he’s in TWINKLE. 🙂

      • Z Ravas says:

See? As much as I enjoy them, these movies tend to blur together for me. I will never forget the sight of Andy Lau in tight spandex fighting alongside Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao! To his credit, Lau mostly held his own during the action scenes, even alongside those onscreen icons.

        • Paul Bramhall says:

True, Lau has always done a solid job of holding his own in martial arts heavy movies. One of my favorite action performances of his (and favorite HK movies for that matter) would come a year after the Lucky Stars flicks in the form of ‘Magic Crystal’. Andy Lau in Greece with Cynthia Rothrock and Richard Norton….and aliens. How can you go wrong with that?

  5. ToryK says:

Ah, shit, look at the hair! 😆😂🤘 With a cast and a hairdo like that, I’m expecting this to be better than The Bodyguard.

  6. Aerosniff Someglue says:

Eddie Peng (I think he’s kinda cool), Tony Leung Ka Fai (I freakin’ love the guy, awesome actor)), Danny Lee (the old days…) and Yuen Wah (a legend). Plus Sammo…

  7. DoctorFromGallifrey says:

Looking forward to this! Love Sammo

  8. Kevin Tran says:

This movie was shot 4 years ago. Sure take a long time. Sammo either has money problems or the pandemic or maybe both.
