The Second World War is over but the fight for China has just begun. Huh. Isn’t this gonna make a few people upset when they buy this thinking they’re gonna either of these three guys fighting each other? 😛 I mean, I haven’t seen it but…I wasn’t under the impression there was much martial arts action involved.

    • The DVD cover is a bit sketchy (especially with those white outfits) – excellent marketing – but the trailer truly paints an honest picture of what to expect out of that movie. Ever see Shinjuku incident? Jackie barely lifts his feet or makes a fist; yet his best in years.

You are right about excellent marketing! I’m not sure I would have recognized the guys if I wasn’t looking right at it. Jackie is supposed to be a reporter, Jet is a national hero, Donnie Yen isn’t even listed. I have seen the vast majority of Jackie’s movies and he has never looked like that! Is he “god” now? Or just a cheap blur?

However I will say as a writer one of the most difficult negotiation points are often about “covers”. Even some well established authors or directors have finally given up and let the studios market any way they want – money is the thing. I don’t think Jackie is even aware of most of the screen cover type issues, and it doesn’t matter to Donnie Yen or Jet Li.

Advertisers will tell you they have to get the “mark” to look at the cover and make a decision in about 8 – 12 seconds or less. I guarantee that cover will get fans of the three stars listed to stop and pick it up for at least a look!

Though I have not seen the film I do resent when marketers imply one thing – three finest martial arts masters in the world fighting – when there is no such thing. It’s also important to remember the people doing the advertising and marketing usually have never seen the film or read the book.

I have a feeling this movie is similar to “A Century of Light and Shadow” in that there is a huge time frame with enormous themes being compressed into a Chinese PC film. Of course it is PC approved or it would not be made. : )

I’ll definitely have a look at this one but I have a good idea what I will see. If the viewer is not familiar with the happenings of the times a great deal of reading needs to be done to be really informed. It’s far too much to expect out of one little film. I’d bet good money there are no martial arts unless clips or demos, but that doesn’t mean it is a bad movie!

I will be watching it and do a review. But I would say at least have a viewing.
