Prepare yourself to witness a good dose of violent revenge with Eli Roth’s (Cabin Fever) upcoming Death Wish remake, which hits theaters on March 2, 2018.

This new version of Michael Winner’s 1973 classic stars Bruce Willis (Die Hard) as Dr. Paul Kersey, a surgeon who only sees the aftermath of Chicago violence when it is rushed into his ER – until his wife (Elisabeth Shue) and daughter (Camila Morrone) are viciously attacked in their suburban home. With the police overloaded with crimes, Paul, burning for revenge, hunts his family’s assailants to deliver justice.

The original Death Wish – based on the 1972 novel by Brian Garfield – involved a New York City architect (Charles Bronson) who becomes a one-man vigilante squad after his wife is murdered by street punks.

Roth came on board to helm the remake after a number of filmmakers dropped out over creative differences with Paramount-MGM. Previous directors included Joe Carnahan (Smokin’ Aces), Gerardo Naranjo (Miss Bala), and finally Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado, the duo responsible for the 2013 cult favorite, Big Bad Wolves.

Back in 2006, Sylvester Stallone expressed interest in his own remake: “Instead of the Bronson character being an architect; my version would have him as a very good cop who had incredible success without ever using his gun. So when the attack on his family happens, he’s really thrown into a moral dilemma in proceeding to carry out his revenge.”

    John Wick, this is not.

Why do I have a feeling that ‘Death Wish V: The Face of Death’ is no longer going to be considered the weakest of the series?

I haven’t seen enough of Eli Roth’s movies, but there some people out there that swear by him. This might be a case of “weak trailer, good movie” as opposed to the opposite. Too bad they picked the most cliche song to play over the trailer, which made my eyes roll. What happened to the dark, gritty tone of the original? Have you guys seen Law Abiding Citizen? Now that’s a Death Wish movie.

I like Eli Roth’s movies well enough, considering he’s made very few of them, but the trailer felt like it was pushing this as a weaksauce PG-13 adaptation complete with AC/DC soundtrack. There was nothing gritty about it…which doesn’t give me much hope. That said, Eli Roth is not a PG-13 kind of guy (anybody see “The Green Inferno”?), so maybe the studio just tried to cut the most slick and commercial trailer it could.

I want this to be good. I really do. I hope that Eli Roth has matured enough since his last batch of films. Its interesting that they kept Joe Carnahan’s screenplay after he left the director’s chair.

Bruce used to be my favorite actor until those stories of him treating everyone like shit came to light. Ralph Garman’s story of how horrible he was during One Upon a Time in Venice gave the impression that he hasn’t changed.

Maybe the movie won’t have AC/DC on the soundtrack and it was just the trailer.

As far as modern “Death Wish” movies go, I feel like Harry Brown and The Fourth Angel are the best ones. (I’m not counting the John Wick films, since they’re more about action.)
