The team responsible for 2017’s Jailbreak – a martial arts flick dubbed “Cambodia’s answer to The Raid” – is back with a vengeance for The Prey.

Dark Star Pictures acquired the film last summer for a U.S. release, and now, the distributor has officially slated a virtual cinema release beginning August 21, followed by a release through VOD starting August 25 (via FCS).

The film is helmed by Jimmy Henderson, produced by Loy Te, and penned by Michael Hogdson (along with new member, Kai Miller). Jailbreak’s breakout star Jean-Paul Ly is on board as the film’s action choreographer.

The Prey stars five time Chinese national boxing, dual arms champion Gu Sheng Wei (Bloody Destiny), and Only God Forgives actors Vithaya Pansringarm (Lupin the Third), Byron Bishop, Sahajak Boonthanakit and Nophand Boonyai. The film also features Jailbeak’s Dara Our and Dy Sonita (via SA).

Here’s a small excerpt from the The Prey’s official plot: Undercover Chinese cop Xin (Gu Sheng Wei) is on a secret international mission when a surprise raid puts him in a remote jungle prison that plays by its own rules. Here, the visitors are wealthy thrill seekers. The guards are hostile puppet masters. And the prisoners are simply pawns in a high stakes game of human hunting human.

Jailbreak, although cheesy in many parts, managed to to entertain me. It was a refreshing mix of a low-budget The Raid, your random Tony Jaa movie and occasional goofy slapstick humor.

Now this looks even better, so I’m only positive I’ll enjoy it. Happy to see Cambodian action movies like this one emerging.

I love Jailbreak. Part of what made that movie work, aside from the legitimately well-choreographed action scenes, is that it had a bit of a tongue-in-cheek attitude throughout. “The Prey” seems to maybe lack that, based on the trailer, and I’m afraid it might be taking itself too seriously for its own good.

I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt though. I’m definitely still gonna watch it, and I also look forward to watching “Jailbreak 2” whenever that decides to land.
