Louis Koo (Accident) and Lau Ching Wan (The Bullet Vanishes) are doing the powered exoskeleton thing with Warriors of Future (previously known as Virtus), a $56M sci-fi action flick that’s being touted as “the most visual effects-heavy Hong Kong film to date, with a future Hong Kong rendered entirely in CGI”.

Warriors of Future (read our review) also stars Carina Lau (Let the Bullets Fly), Nick Cheung (Bodies at Rest) and Philip Leung (Shock Wave 2).

According to THR, the Hong Kong-China co-production tells the story of a meteorite crashing down on a barren future Earth ravaged by pollution and global warming, bringing with it a fast-growing alien vine that purifies the planet but kills everything in its path. Armed with the plant’s genetic map, the heavily armored military of an unnamed city tries but fails to destroy it and uncovers a conspiracy.

Despite being CGI heavy, Warriors of Future also uses practical effects, such as a life-size robot to let the actors know what they are acting against, Ng explained.

At one point, the late Benny Chan (Raging Fire, Call of Heroes) was attached to direct, but the film ultimately ended up in the hands of Ng Yuen-Fai, a talent known for his special effects work on films such as Bodyguards and Assassins and The White Storm.

The long-awaited Warriors of Future is scheduled for a U.S. release on December 2, 2022 on Netflix.

  1. Nick G says:

    Colour me intrigued.

  2. Paul Bramhall says:

“Until then, check out this 1995 preliminary “teaser” below:” – The only thing that made me laugh more than this line, was the inclusion of ‘FATface’ in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

  3. Phil Chan says:

LOL this has been teased for ages. Hopefully 2022 is the year this finally gets a release, very intrigued to see this given the resources Koo’s company put into it.

    • JJ Bona says:

That’s what I was thinking, man. Could this be the Chinese version of Avatar? Or an epic big budget failure? Next thing we’ll hear is they’re making back-to-back sequels.

  4. Aerosniff Someglue says:

OK. Wanna bet? IT WILL BOMB AT THE CHINESE BOX-OFFICE. And of course everywhere else.

  5. Phil Chan says:

Finally watched this last night. Visually, it certainly doesn’t disappoint, though your eyes are gonna occasionally hurt from how fast the action moves at times. Story and characterization were clearly not high on the priority list for this production. Still worth a watch though it may be a stretch in finding replay value out of this one.
