Reviews GWAILO'S REVIEW: The seemingly downward spiral of Asian culture is scrutinized in this fun "heyday" hybrid romp. A cross section of "hongkies", a school teacher (Loletta Lee), a cosmetologist (Fennie Yuen), a meter maid (Cynthia Khan), a taxi-driver (Lau Ching-Wan), and a small potato triad thug (Dayo Wong) go on a tourist vacation with a converted christian tour guide played by Waise Lee. The story never makes itself clear on why these people are vacationing in Thailand but it doesn't matter. PB throws so much nonsense at you, you become mesmerized. Comedy, action, and melodrama run rampant throughout and you dare not get in the way. Cynthia Khan is even given a chance to display her martial arts on the baddies that tail our hongkie heroes tour bus( a suspected nod to John Ford's Stagecoach). Derek Chiu's (The Log, Commeupance) first film works wonders with Dayo Wong's preachy script and the who's who cast are always enjoyable to watch. Lau Ching-Wan does his best Travis Bickle as a HK taxi driver fed up with the filth of HK humanity, Loletta Lee plays a teacher, angered by the bureaucracy of the school system, and Waise Lee plays a tour guide with a secret.......he works undercover for Scotland Yard!!! That's the type of film this is. Out of control. They don't make them like this anymore. GWAILO'S RATING: 6.5/10 |
