PERKELE'S REVIEW: So this is Sammo's 1990 follow-up to his definite masterwork "Encounters of the Spooky Kind". Naturally my expectations were high, but this film was a disappointment. I don't say that it's bad, pretty darn good actually, but I was expecting a hell lot of more

My problems with this film started before I even had seen it, because I couldn't find a subtitled WIDESCREEN copy of it anywhere. So I had to survive with a subbed, fullscreen (argh, you know, pan&scan version 4:3 awf) print.  Now afterwards, I don't think that "EOTSK2" wouldn't be very much better if viewed in letterboxed format. OK, enough of that shit, let's get on with it.

This part II is a rather direct sequel to the part I [I think]. Sammo plays the same character as in the first movie and Lam Ching-Ying reprises his role as the Taoist priest [from "Mr. Vampire"]. Regular Jackie Chan partner from his older films [i.e. "Heart of the Dragon"] Mang Hoi plays Sammo's sidekick. The plot, once again, didn't come too clear to me there was some wealthy but evil nobelman who hires a equally evil Taoist to get rid of Sammo Hung, because they're after the same girl. Then there was a stupid and unnecessary sub-plot involving a female-ghost. Lots of fooling around, and somehow along the way Lam Ching-Ying comes to aid Sammo & Mang Hoi. I think. However, the first 2/3 of the movie drags, but the wild and creative final fight more than makes up for it.  Locked in a creepy dungeon, Sammo, Meng Hoi and Lam Ching-Ying encounter dangerous traps and battle it out with gyonshies, almost undefeatable kung fu mummies and skilled snakemen [Ti Wei & pal]. Recommended.
