The Debt Collector | DVD (Sony)

RELEASE DATE: June 5, 2018

On June 5th, Sony Pictures is releasing The Debt Collector (aka The Pay Up) on DVD (read our review). This “buddy pic” actioner teams Scott Adkins (Savage Dog) with filmmaker Jesse V. Johnson (Accident Man) for a 4th time (5th if you count 2005’s Pit Fighter).

French (Adkins) is running a martial arts gym – but it hasn’t exactly been paying the bills. To make ends meet, he begins working for the notorious Tommy, servicing various criminal outfits throughout California. Working by a number scale, with #10 being a threat and a #1 being a full-on trip to the hospital, French and his partner Sue (Louis Mandylor) are in charge of chasing down any kind of criminal or low-life who owes money to the organization.

Rounding out the cast are Michael Paré (Streets of Fire), Tony Todd (The Crow), Vladimir Kulich (Savage Dog), David William No (Mr. Nice Guy) and Selina Lo (Triple Threat).

The cast also includes Paul Mandylor from Martial Law.

  2. Decent plot – check. Well drawn characters – check. A witty script – check. & best of all, Adkins not being forced to put on an American accent – check. This seems to be a worthy follow up to ‘Accident Man’ in terms of quality, so hope he keeps it up.

Louis Mandylor is giving me something of a Mickey Rourke vibe in this trailer (though obviously he’s looking a bit more intact than Mr. Rourke these days). I approve!

Also great to see Tony Todd showing up as a heavy, that guy just has a terrific screen presence.

No Blu-ray release for the U.S.?!?

    • Nope, it’s a Sony special DVD only as per usual for the U.S.. It’s got a Blu-ray release in Germany, coming out later this month.

I’d really don’t understand this trend. Surely the people that still buy physical media are collectors & want the film presented in the best way possible. I personally would buy these films on Ultra HD 4K discs if they were available. I know this is a little too much to ask for but it seems like in 2018 Blu-ray should be the default standard. I don’t even remember the last time I bought a DVD.

I went through the same thing with Undisputed II. I imported the German Blu-ray but it was region locked & didn’t play on my U.S. machine. I ended up buying it on Digital HD just to have but this is not my preferred way of collecting. Sorry to rant but I just want these films in all their HD glory! Thanks for confirming the DVD only release.

I don’t understand it either. But I’m thinking it has something to do with exclusivity deals they make with Netflix or On Demand (Sony giving them exclusivity to stream it at high-def is the clincher… “exclusivity”, even in the context of video quality, will put the ink on paper for a movie that’s lower-in-demand, than say, “The Scorpion King 3”), while retailers like Walmart/Amazon are stuck with DVD-only copies of certain titles. It’s not 2010 anymore, so I can’t imagine the production of a DVD being a lot less expensive than Blu-ray (even if it is, Blu-ray is the norm these days and nearly every household has 1080p TVs, which would make the DVD look grainy). I’m sorta talking out of my ass… just a wild guess. The bottom line is their DVD-only decision is based off numbers, and somehow, it’s more profitable, which is not understood by individuals – like us – who shell out $15 for a physical copy. For movies like this, it seems business-to-business rules over business-to-consumer in the corporate world. Of course, we see Blu-ray editions in Germany because of the obvious: they have better taste in action movies and Scott Adkins is as hot as a selling point over there as Mark Wahlberg is in Hollywood.

It’s kind of funny how it works. For me personally, I’ve only seen Adkin’s recent films like Accident Man, Close Range, and Eliminators released on Blu Ray. I think some distributors get a better deal.
