Today’s Deal on Fire is the Blu-ray for Sky on Fire (read our review), by Hong Kong’s legendary action director, Ringo Lam.

In this driving, non-stop action thriller, the chief security officer at a top-secret medical facility (Daniel Wu) finds himself caught in an explosive battle when a young thief and his accomplices steal a groundbreaking curative medicine. After discovering the true origins of the medicine, the officer must decide who he can trust to protect the cure from falling into the wrong hands and prevent an all-out war from bringing the city to its knees.

Sky on Fire also stars Amber Kuo (Jian Bing Man), Joseph Chang (Wild City), and Jingchu Zhang (Switch).

Wu (That Demon Within), the film’s leading star, is describing it as City on Fire 2: “I said yes without even reading the script because John Woo, Ringo Lam and Tsui Hark are the guys who have initiated this new wave of classic Hong Kong and I always wanted to work with them. The movie is called Sky on Fire, but it could just as well be described as City on Fire 2,” said Wu, in reference to Lam’s seminal 1987 classic, City on Fire.

Looks good. They pack a lot into 20 seconds.

This trailer is very similar to the trailer they had for Wild City and that movie was a huge let down. And please tell me this isn’t a mainland film.

I thought Wild City was alright. The plot got a tad complicated in that one, and I remember there being a lack of action, which is fine, if the character work and conflicts are engaging, but I remember being a little disengaged with it. That being said, it was a step in the right direction for Lam, who since died in my eyes because he did those terrible DTV films with Van Damme. Overall, Wild City is an alright film. It’s no classic, and probably won’t be remembered years from now, but it helped reannounce Lam. As for Sky on Fire, the trailer is pretty awesome, and the action looks great. The cgi looks pretty bad, as in Wild City, and I hope its at a minimum.

      • Gabriel Land says:

Lam’s DEB films with Damme were some of JCVD’s best, despite their shortcomings. I never watched Wild City so I can’t comment on it but one thing that raises red flags for me on this trailer is their excessive CGI. They didn’t even get a real helicopter. WTF.

        • HKFanatic says:

I’m also a fan of Ringo Lam’s work with Van Damme. Maximum Risk is a great little action/thriller, while Replicant and In Hell are both solid direct-to-video action movies.

    • Sam says:

I thought Wild City was quite good, not as good as Ringo Lam’s old films in the 80s, but a solid film and one of the better HK films of the last few years.

Everyone is speaking Mandarin so i’m guessing its a mainland film, but even if it was filmed in Cantonese and in HK the filmmakers would still have made it to fit mainland restrictions (unless they don’t want to make any money), so i don’t think it makes much difference.

Im hopeful this will be good, but i agree with what others have said there looks like theres going to be a bit to much sub par CGI…
